I watched this movie late last night by myself and watched it tonight with my wife. It principally centers around the events following the assassination and is framed by a reporter's (Teddy White) interview with Jackie Kennedy for Life Magazine.
Natalie Portman is Jackie and her performance is simply amazing, mind blowing; there is no other word for it.
In addition, the director skillfully mixes in footage from 1963. John Hurt plays a priest counseling Mrs. Kennedy and he is superb in a small role, as is Billy Crudup as the reporter. I thought the actor who played Bobby Kennedy was just ok; he comes off as not exactly weak but not strong either.
It's all very moving and it took me back to that time when I had just turned 13. Just a very sad feeling watching it and remembering those events in our country's history. Amazing movie.
Portman' performance is one of the best I've seen and I can't understand how she didn't win an Academy Award. That they gave it to an actress in a musical is puzzling but, as my wife said, receding an award involves a lot of politics, not just merit.
