When growing up, my toy soldier collection, for the most part, was comprised of Britains. Every so often, however, I would receive a box of Johilco toy soldiers for Christmas and birthday gifts. I was wondering, if anyone knows, if there is any book or other literature in existence, which catalogues, or details Johilco's toy soldier production? Did anyone ever describe the Johilco line of soldiers and sets similar to what Joe Wallis and others have accomplished with detailing the Britains line? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Dick. I don't know of any book cataloguing Johillco - but have heard anecdotally that the book below ( 328 pages) gives an account of the Johillco Company - and has quite a few photos - BUT - never seen it myself. Maybe try and find it in a library - and have a look yourself before purchasing a second-hand copy????? I'm told it was published in USA(???) - so maybe you have a fighting chance of finding one.

I also believe Joplin's BIG book on old hollowcasts has some pics on Johillco's range - so maybe try to find that one too. I believe Joplin's book is quite pricey - so again, suggest a browse in a library first, might be a better idea.

Just a couple of thoughts. Good luck - I like many of them too - especially the Cowboys and Injuns :D! - Johnnybach

Thank you very much for the info. You have given me a good starting point.

Hi Dick,

I believe the book Collecting Foreign-Made Toy Soldiers, Identification and Value Guide, ISBN #0-89689-122-4, by Richard O'Brien, has an entire section devoted to JoHillCo. The book includes a short discussion of the history of the company.

O'Brien's book is long out of print, but I think it can easily be found on Amazon. Also, I would not pay any attention to the values listed as the book was published years ago.

I hope this information is helpful to you.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)

I don't believe there has ever been a definitive guide on any of the manufacturers except Britains. They all do seem to have some coverage though in the various books that are out there.
