Hi everybody, this is my very first post. I've read some of the threads here and it seem everyone gets to know one another very well, I hope to get that way too, everyone seems real nice and very helpful. I'm sorta of a young guy in this hobby, and have been mostly a plastics collector; but, I'm starting to get in the realm of painted metal. I'm starting with John Jenkins, I just bought his Lt. Jenkins to get started on the collector club and ordered a Halkett set. I figured this is a good place to get started into his line. The problem is I'm a young guy and his MOnongahela stuff came out a little too early for me, so now here I am trying to find someone who wants to sell some of their stuff. I humbly ask for a reasonable price. Not sure if anyone is interested, but I'm phasing out of some Conte and Barzso stuff if anyone wants to trade/swap. Thanks for reading, I hope to hear from you guys and to get to know yous better:)

Welcome to the Forum,

If I was to advise anyone on BoM now, I would say forget the British BoM Troops and focus on obtaining the unretired current stock of JJD, especially the 28th regiment from the Battle of Quebec Series.

John's work has greatly improved since his first releases. The Quebec 28th Regiment contains many similar poses to the BoM's 44th, and the quality is much better --- you can make a complete firing line of privates, sergeants, drummers, and officers with the 28th. The slight variation in uniform difference is really minor, especially as both regiments had yellow facings (red versus a special lighter weight white trouser). In addition, the regimental flag is very similar in color.

Get the Indians (WIM) while they are still available at the retail price, these sculptures are superb.

Hi Fraxinus, thanks for replying. I think that sounds like the best idea, get what's available now, while I can. I was thinking the same thing, I might kick myself later for not buying what I can at retail. I know I am going to want these sets later, so why should I try and get the retired sets first, I will be playing catchup the whole time. I will probably go with your advice and my instinct. I appreciate your advice on the quebec series; however, I don't think I can branch out into the quebec line yet. My plan is to collect the BoM and later the BoS, and the rangers st. francis raid. That may take up alot of my finances.
Maybe I could collect those and take a shot at changing the paint scheme on the uniforms, I have a pretty steady hand and a good eye; but I'm not too hot on "destroying" a jenkins figure, as i understand they are very well painted.

HI BLAKE...Welcome to forum. You cant get any better advice than what Fraximus
has given you the 28th. is nice and the grenadiers are starting to come out.
Dont give up on B.O.M. watch on ebay and on forum you may get lucky and pick
up a set here and there. Keep it as a sideline BLAKE IT WILL MAKE COLLECTING a
challenge and more fun. Good luck.

More fun? I guess I'll have to take your word for it;) Does anyone else have that "I want it now" feeling?:D
I forgot to mention, maybe the french justacorps and militia and summerdress figures could go along with the monongahela french. Will they work together, in terms of historical accuracy? Or, what the heck, a fantasy battle like those of mikemiller1955 pics. I seen his pics, if he collects anymore, I'm gonna start calling him mikemiller1755 instead:p (I know that wasn't a funny joke)

Hello Blake ...its nice to see another John Jenkins collector......I would start collecting the not retired sets .......the other day on eBay I saw some of the early BOM sets go for over 3 hundred dollars.......both sets sold for almost $700 total........I myself have all the Quebec series and most of Snowshoe and some BOM......I find a little patience will help in the long run.....good luck!!!!!!

Hello and welcome Blake...

always glad to have a Jenkins collector join the forum...

have fun and good luck...:)

Hi Blake, and welcome to the forum.
I can only echo the advice so far. Get the 28th Foot whilst they're still available at retail. I think the BOS will go before though. I think a couple of sets from BOS have become hard to get already. So maybe concentrate on this series first. You probably wouldn't want to buy multiples of BOS, but maybe some of the Quebec series are more suited to multiples. I think grenadiers for this series are on the cards.

Its a compulsive hobby mind!

Pete

Welcome, Blake. I, too, am fairly new to the forum; only have had time to participate in the past few weeks myself.

I have intermingled BOQ with BOM figures in my "set-ups." I keep them separated by regiments, but the other posters are correct that the BOM sets are now prohibitively priced if one wishes to assemble firing lines, etc.

Some of the French from BOQ line do fit perfectly in a Monagahela set-up, especially those in the blue justacorps (small clothes) and brown leggings. Over 100 Company Frenche de la Marine participated in the battle and probably were dressed in small clothes. It was very hot the day of the battle, so I do not mix in the French Regulars in their grey-white coats. However, including those figures lends more "color" and certainly more poses to the French side, and re-enactors of Monagahela are often pictured in their "Regimentals" -- so why quibble? If you have room for a large Monagahela set-up, add the BOQ French Regulars, too. The more the merrier!

So far, as a collector, you don't seem too far gone. I note that you haven't used the verb "need" as we who are totally addicted too often do. When one "needs" toy soldiers one either needs to get professional help...or a second job.

Hi Marc, thanks for answering. That's a great idea on the french of quebec, after other replies from others and you, I'm still not sold on combining the british though, unless I tried to alter the paint job (I really don't want to do that). Oh, I guess I could've used the word "need," I guess I'm just holding back on you guys, but I suppose this a safe forum where we can admit our weaknesses to each other, lol. I've mostly been a plastics collector, mostly barzso and conte, and i've made a big collection of those because I "needed" them (including the conte alamo which I've never set up). That's 54mm, don't get me started on my 1/72 scale, i have over a thousand confederates and over a thousand union in this small plastic scale. Now I think I need a doctor;) Well maybe not, I'm planning to start thinning out my plastic range to fund my metal expedition, but keep the doctor on hold if I ever go nuts collecting metal (which is probably inevitable )

Actually, I am saving up for the next JJD series release --- Grant's Defeat (Battle of Fort Duquesne)..... This battle is often thought of a smaller version of the BoM and ended the same way --- a major British defeat. My release prediction is made without any knowledge, supporting rumor or even a scrap of evidence !!!!

Why do I say this? The regimental flag of the 77th Highlanders is so much more appealing than that of the 42nd Highlanders and that other release possibility ------the Battle of Bushy Run!!!

Nod, nod --- the smart money is on Grant's Defeat!!!!

Anyone want to hear my playoff predictions?

Wow, you got me excited for a second, I thought JJ was going to make this; but I'll echo your prediction that this would be a good series, so I will dream with you:eek: Robert Griffing has a great painting of Grant's piper, this could be the very first figure in this series!
