Can any Waterloo buffs weigh in one the 5th episode with Jonathan Strange at Hougoumont? I was impressed that the series threw the character into a small in numbers but dramatic incident of the battle and then injected magic to save the fight. It looks like the costumers also dated the French and British uniforms to 1815 from the uniforms seen in earlier episodes set in Portugal.

Hi Scott,
Briefly......Hougoumont farm and Chateau was the important building complex which anchored Wellington's right wing for the defensive battle ahead. To hold this position Wellington sent some of his best troops. Initially members of some of Wellingtons allied Regiments (Nassau/Hanoverians/and Jaegers) provided an interim garrison but were presently joined by members of all the British Foot Guards including the light companies and some of the Grenadier companies. In the epic struggle that followed, Napoleon got himself bogged down trying to take Hougoumont and more and more French troops were diverted to this "Battle within a battle" the French attacks were generally to no avail but at about 1230 Lt. Legros of the 1st French Legere managed to force the North gate open (as this faced the British position on the ridge, it had been partially open to let in supplies etc.)he and about 30 of his men gained access but the British guards swiftly closed the gates behind them then proceeded to kill most of these brave Frenchmen. Legend says that only a drummer boy was spared. It was this phase of the battle that was focused upon on Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell. As the position was held all day, the garrison were able to affect other stages of the battle including firing into the French cavalry as they passed Hougoumont during their brave but abortive attacks on the main Allied line.
Hope this very brief overview was helpful.
Regards,
Johnboy.
