Just a fun read. The dates of interest to me are between August 4, 1756 and to the end of Volume II (Apparently written by a Lt. George Bartman on Governor Shirley Staff). START ABOUT PAGE 33!!!! This notebook ends about PAGE 46.
Please note the two 30-ton sloops the British were using to patrol Lake George in 1756 ---- subsequently burnt by the French in March 1757 during a winter attack on Fort William Henry.
In Summer/Fall 1756, thousands of colonial troops gather at Fort William Henry with the purpose of striking north and taking Fort Carillon (Ticonderoga) from the French. Following the loss of Fort Oswego (Lake Ontario, August 1756), Lord Loudoun cancels the offensive campaign against the French. Winslow is the colonial General charged with taking Fort Carillon and Fort St. Frederic (Summer/Fall 1756). He is often mentioned in the journal. New Osprey volume on the loss of Fort Oswego to Montcalm is expected in September 2014.
Lord Loudoun moves 12 artillery pieces, including six 18-pounders and a 13-inch mortar from Fort William Henry to Fort Edward (never attacked by French artillery).
November 1756, Major William Eyre with 2 companies of the 44th and 2 companies of the 48th plus rangers (paid directly by the British Army) replace the colonial troops at Fort William Henry. Major Eyre successfully defends Fort William Henry against a French attack in March 1757. The 35th regiment takes over Fort William Henry soon afterwards.
Colonel Monro (35th regiment) surrenders Fort William Henry in August 1757.
