Lots of talk about the upcoming movie on von Stauffenberg - and today is the anniversary of the attempt to kill Hitler. One of the cable channels did a great reenactment of the actual events including the use of similar explosives and concluded that had the briefcase not been moved behind the leg of the conference table or had von S. used both of the bombs that he brought that day, Hitler would almost certainly have been killed. Even if he had just left the second bomb in the briefcase unarmed (he was interrupted before he could arm it) Hitler would have died. Small twists of fate. Might make for an interesting toy soldier set to coincide with the movie. Hint, hint.

Mr von Richthofen,

I heard that the Tom Cruise and the filmmakers has some problems to film in Germany and the former East Prussia (Kalanigrad in Russian) Did you have any clue concerning the deadline for this move and when it's come to the theatres?

Cheers:)

Valkyrie is scheduled for release on Aug. 8, 2008 (subject to change - why not July 20?)

Oh don't show that!! My wife fancies him enough as it is,probably even as a Nazi!!

Seriously though looks like it might be a good movie.Brave man, came so close didn't he,I saw a History Channel prog in which they reckon the sturdy Table played a role in saving Hitlers life. The conspiritors also faced a gruesome death didn't they.

Hollywood will probably pursue the "hero" angle since that may sell tickets (in their opinion). In reality, Von S. was a fairly ardent nazi who only saw the light when the war appeared to be lost. His actions were driven by a desire to avoid total defeat and the somewhat naive idea that the germans could come to terms with the western allies after Hitler's demise and still fight the russians. At least that is my vague recollection of the events. May spur an interesting discussion when it comes out - particularly in germany. The critics will probably pan this because it is a serious topic and Cruise is not considered a serious actor.

Not sure if Von S was indeed an ardent Nazi, he certainly donated enough body parts to the cause though. Like you say, it'll be interesting to see what the film critics say.
Rob is also correct, the conspirators, their families - and people even remotely connected to them suffered horrendously in the aftermath of the failed plot.

Harry, its another case of if only isn't it?.Can only imagine how many lives may have been saved on both sides.

Yes Rob, and not just the lives that might have been saved if WW2 had ended earlier, is the fact that the bulk of Eastern Europe might have been saved from Stalin and his monsterous regime.
I have always wondered if "Unconditional Surrender" was a mistake - but then again, once you consider the Nazi death camps, maybe it was the correct approach - I dunno, its a difficult one to decide on.

I Agree, its very Easy for us to now question Historic decisions but as you say its a difficult one.If only someone had put a bullet in Hitlers head in 1939.

Would've been better if the "Night of the Long Knives" had backfired on the entire miserable gang of them. Its all conjecture of course.
I can in fact understand the attraction of the Nazis, Facists, Stalinism, etc. on the face of it - but the underlying evil is there for anyone to see. You just need to plug "Waffen SS" into youtube and look at some of the poted comments to realise that the same twisted individuals still exist. I plugged this in out of curiousity to see if there was any good info on uniforms, weapons, tanks, etc. but was so shocked on reading the comments that I decided there and then I'll get my source material elsewhere, thank you very much.

Yeah that sort of thing gives me the creeps. For all the trouble there is in the world these days how worse it would have been if those scum had won.Whatever the differences between all sorts of nations we can be very proud that they all came together and gave them the biggest a*** kicking of all time.
