I took my family to the American Airpower Museum today. Its about 20 minutes from my house, but I had never been before. We got to climb into a C47 Dakota that actually dropped members of the 101st Airborne on D-Day and during Market Garden, the kids got to sit in the cockpits of a couple of different planes, and we got to see a Russian L-39 Albatross Jet Fighter take off from about 100 feet from us.

There was also a PBY Catalina, a P40 Warhawk, a P47 Thunderbolt, a P51 D Mustang, an Avenger, a Corsair, a B25 Mitchell, several T6 Texan trainers, an F84 Thunderjet (Korean War), an F-105 Thunderchief (Thud) (Vietnam) and an F-111 (Vietnam), all of which are still able to fly!

I sent some photos of the day to Brad, with a polite request that he post them on this thread.

There were King & Country descending 101st airborne and action posed airborne in one of the dioramas in the museum - Andy would have been in his glory!:p

The tour guide told us that if we had visited 2 Sundays ago, we would have met an American Ace (Marc (Beaufighter) informed me that the elderly tour guide was confused about the identity of the ace, as he named an ace who passed away in 2002). I think I will have to add a visit to this museum to the 2011 Symposeum.

Those are great pictures Louis. I recently visited the Warner Robins GA AFB museum which also has a P-51, C-47, P-40, B-25, and others. I love visiting museums with old WWII warbirds.

PARACHUTE! DON'T FORGET THE PARACHUTE!!!

Great photos Louis, looks like you and the kids had a great time.

Did the c-47's have a sliding door for the paratroops?

Dear Louis:

Thanks for your posting#1 on the US Air Force museum. Sounds interesting indeed. I had a older first counsin who died on September 20, 1944 some 2+ months before I was born when the C-47 he was the pilot of crashed onto the shoreline of Holland. I assume that he had been part of the Market Garden Operation back then.

Regards, Gary / "Iron Brigade"

Looks like you have a nice detour to your family
be it gorgeous pictures of the museum
is sees the whole picture of the flying tiger
but above all to find a dio KC remains worthwhile.
richard.

Looks like a good time was had by all! Question, the new K&C planes appear to be finished in matt paint, was that the practice during the war because these museum pieces all look to be painted in a high gloss finish! Love the P-40, hope K&C do one of those ( British desert version pls ). :)

Hey Louis mate,
How come this Museum wasn't on the 2010 Symposium agenda???? Are you trying to encourage more Aussies to the 2011 one?
Cheers Howard

The youngest is my daughter Ashley, but the 4 year old is my son, Alec . . . :)

And believe me, I treasure every day with them. While they are young enough to actually want to spend time with Mom and Dad, we are taking a trip to the "Old Bethpage" Historical village next Saturday, and to the Aircraftcarrier Intrepid Museum 2 Saturdays after that.

hey louis,go to the musuem every memorial day weekend, great time.they fly all the aircraft that are in the airshow to the airport and are taking off and landing all weekend, kids not to mention myself love it,wife not so much.they also give rides in the c47 and a b17 that will land there friday afternoon.try and go next year you will love it.also, saturday at 10am at eisenhower park the usmc put on a very impressive show, doing flyovers with hueys and cobra gunships, the marines repel out and then the helis land in the field.then the kids can climb in and take pics, can also hold any of the gear the marines put out on display.anyone in the ny area should try and go to both, you will not be sorry.louis,i also have a new pba card, just been so busy, but will get it to you asap.
