PBS is airing a show this week on NOVA relating the story of Japanese mini-subs used during the Pearl Harbor attack. Some recent evidence appears to indicate that one sub was in Pearl Harbor during the attack and may have fired its torpedoes. It was long thought that none of the subs made it into Pearl.

Recently revisited the War of the Pacific in Fredricksburg, tx. they've opened a new section as big as the existing museum. This japanese Mini-sub is on display, really Awesome as is all the new displays, the multi-media set up is very well done.
Sorry about the pic quality

If you want to see some passionate (or bitter) postings, mention the Pearl Harbor mini subs on a couple of the naval sites. Wow, these guys will jump on you fast! There are believers and disbelievers bot with claims to back themselves up.

For PBS in the Chicago area the show is on tomorrow, January 5th at 8:00 pm (CST). Will not be home but the DVR has been set.

Interesting show. I think they made a decent case that the mini-sub entered Pearl Harbor and fired on the battleships. The fact that the torpedo tubes were empty is fairly compelling under the circumstances. It would be hard to explain what else they would have fired the torpedoes at that day. Add the photo, radio transmission and evidence that a non-aerial torpedo was found and it sort of adds up. Also interesting that these were quasi-suicide missions. If you believe the recreation, then these guys blew themselves up intentionally when scuttling the sub.

I watched the show and found it to support theories I became aware of a couple of years ago. The circumstantial evidence, and especially the photo, would seem to confirm that a sub did indeed get into the harbor. Probably never be able to prove if the submariners ever hit anything. Interesting aspect of the PH operation. -- lancer
