Does anyone know if the KGL formed lines and squres when they fought or were they only skirmishers?? Want to know how I will display them correctly.

WELLINGTON:confused:

The kings german legion was formed in 1803. It was made up of germans who fled hanover after the french took over and went to england as hanover was an english province and were supplied by britain thats why they looked just like british troops. the line troops wore red like the british but all the light troops wore green and had baker riffles and they adopted british battalion organization and tactics they fought in 2 rank line but would also be used as skimishers also. and I would asume when in square they would like the british be on the end wall of the square EX. (when in colum the british would have the grenadier up front and the the 1st line -8th line behind them then the light in back. to form square the grenadiers and the light inf. would form the front and back of the square and the line troops 1-8 would subdivide and form the sides. as there were more line troops than grenadier or light it would be more of a rectangle than a square, four men deep.) To form line from colum they would spread out the columin to form a line with the light inf. going to far left and the grenadiers to the far right with the line troops in order inbetween,in numbered order linetroops 1-8. I hope this helps if i didn,t confuse you. Maybe someone else on this site can explain it better to you if not.

Thanks for your reply...yes I am confused.... ...but you did answer my question and I now understand they did both...thanks for your help.....:)

Cheers

I would rate it as the best book on waterloo that i have read, not that i,ve read tons of books on waterloo but i,ve read a few(waterloo is the most written about battle in history also napoleon the most written about person). I love the way the book was done it has all kinds of very interesting things in it. I realy like the way that they put short highlighted sections through out the book for a quick read about all kinds of things that happened in the battle like eye witness acounts from the soldiers who fought the battle and the photos of the battle field with troop deployment overlays and some great photos and color uniform plates. I would have to give it 5 out of 5 stars like the others did on amazon its a great book and worth every penny and is quite large and heavy thats its only draw back. Its over 400 pg.s long i,m still reading it. Anyone with interest in the napoleonic wars or history in general would like this book.http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/08...104-7381679-9626324?n=507846&s=books&v=glance

Wellington I,m glad to hear that i in a way I led you to this great book on trafalgar but i,m not big on naval history. I do know the whole deal about the battle and how his plan of cutting threw the french/spanish fleet would bring his guns to bear on the rear of there ships and all that and have seen many a special on nelson and know of some of the other battles like egypt ect. but its not my thing. Have you ever watched the hornblower a&e movie series I think you would really like them and you can get the dvd boxed set cheap if you shop around I got mine for $45 for a 6 dvd set (used but in mint shape) and i,ve seen it new at around just a little more than that price. Also a really good series is the sharp series 14 dvds about the 95 rifles in the peninsular war I love this series but a little more hollywood than history but still great. You can pick them up cheap on overstock.com. They always seem to have most of them check back latter if they don,t as stock always changes. Let me know what you think of the waterloo book when you get it if you can put down the trafalgar book that is. If its anything like the waterloo book it,ll keep you busy for awhile.

The Sharpe's books are very entertaining if somewhat on the light end of the literary scale. The BBC series is top notch. For nautical fiction on the Napoleonic era, it is impossible to surpass the Patrick O'Brian books. But sure you probably know that.

I absolutely will never give up my collection of O'Brian's. These books, I am on my third read of the entire collection, are the best I have ever read dealing with the age of sail, and I have read many books on the subject. I would like to see more movies like "Captain and Commander, the Far Side of the World." made. I also collect prints of sailing vessels and find that the romance of the sea is quite a thrill for a midwesterner like me. Reading books on Nelson and other sea heros, along with watching "Victory at Sea" are some of the reasons why I spent 20 years at sea. Michael

You have found me out. I am name dislexic (-5 points for spelling, also world's worst speller). It is as you said "Master" not Captain. The book was better than the movie, but what book isn't. Regardless, the movie was, for me, spell binding. Thanks Wellington.;) Michael

Sceic2...If you like Master and Commander, did you have a look at the "Battle of Trafalgar" thread I posted, if you didn't have a look at the print I have purchased. I still don't have it I was just told its on order 2-4 weeks, can't wait!!

Forgot to mention my Kings German Legion arrives today....
