greetings all. new member, first posting. i am curious as to flag colors of qf-02. my research indicates that the colors on this flag are in fact red over black, not black over red as is painted in the set. i hate to nitpick but correct flags are important. does anyone have any info on this? don't get me wrong, i love jenkins figures. i think they are the best on the market.

Welcome to Forum Lancer. My research shows the La Sarre flag has having the white cross with the 1st and 3rd quarter dark red brown and the other two quarters Black. I would say Jenkin's flag is correct.

I think there is a description of them, if not an illustration, in Osprey's "Army of Louis XV", in the volume on the infantry regiments. I will check tonight, when I get home.

Prost!

Thanks for the replies from Leadman and The Baron. According to pictures in Osprey campaign Quebec (pg. 75) and Ticonderoga (pgs. 63 and 82) the La Sarre flag is red over black. Starting at the staff, upper left is red, upper right is black, lower left is black, lower right is red. This is opposite of the Jenkins paint job. My resources are limited and it is possible the French hung their banners in different ways but that does not seem likely. Correcting the possible error is easy but not to be done until I am sure. All info welcome. Thanks in advance.

thanks to PolarBear for the welcome and the website. the website shows the flag both ways so it would seem i will not change a thing and be happy that the French were adaptable. thanks to all for the responses.

This might be a silly suggestion, but there might be confusion among sources, about the obverse or reverse side of the flag. I wonder if the conflicting descriptions come from having confused one side with the other. If the obverse side (ie, viewed with the staff at the left) showed the first canton (ie, upper left) as black, then if we looked at the other side of that flag, the upper right canton would be black. Now, confuse the obverse and reverse by moving the staff, and now we have 1st canton red, 2nd canton black.

Still, it looks like 2 votes to 1 for black in the 1st canton, in those sources.

BTW, I was mistaken in my memory about the Osprey series. There is only a general explanation of the system of colors that French regiments carried, and the design, but nothing more specific about the individual regiment's colors.

Prost!

Baron, thanks for the input on the flags. Hadn't considered that possibility. I am relative newcomer to FIW and Royalist French military, in terms of uniforms and colors. Have been around military history for many moons but my knowledge of FIW is rather general. All info is welcome and time appreciated.

Glad to be of any help!

Tracking down sources, and trying to get details, can be a lot of fun, and it can also spark heated debate. The two are guaranteed, if you add beer to the mix ;)

Prost!

I don't know whether this will confuse the issue, I found this on the web.

thanks to aujj65. there are several sources i have seen now, most provided by forum members and some in books i own or looked at. the only conclusion i can draw is that the flag must have been correct either way, (black OR red on top) and that my figure will stay as is. thanks to all.

For what it's worth, there were two La Sarre flags evident at the Fort Ticonderoga event this weekend. The one flying over the fort appeared identical to the JJ version. The La Sarre re-enactors had a slightly different version in that it had darker burgundy instead of red squares. Almost purple in appearance. They only spoke French and had the flag made themselves. So that was all the information I could gather.

How was Ticonderoga's reenactment. I heard it was a big one this year and would like to have seen it. Prices of gas my reenactor friends did not attend. Leadmen
