LCVP Hull Numbers - A History Lesson (1 Viewer)

I thought that some of my fellow collectors would like to have some history behind the hull numbers on the new K&C LCVP’s.

The first group of numbers on the hull (PA26) refers to the Attack Transport Ship (APA) “mother” ship where the LCVP’s are held in davits until used to transport troops (alive and uninjured both before combat and the wounded and dead after combat) or supplies. In this case PA26 refers to the USS Samuel Chase APA-26.

The second hull number (21 and 22) refers to the LCVP’s numbering system of the LCVP’s assigned to a specific ship, in this case APA-26 USS Samuel Chase.

The Samuel Chase landed members of the 1st Infantry Division at Normandy and participated in numerous other allied landings in the European, North African and Asian theaters (although none were listed for Asia, Samuel Chase must have been in at least the Iwo Jima and Okinawa landings that were each larger than the Normandy or any other non-Asia theater amphibious landings).

This link http://www.navsource.org/archives/10/03/03026.htm has a history of the Samuel Chase and some photos.
