The lines of LEMAX Christmas villages have 18"x 48" landscape mats. There is a green grass, brown sand, and moss mat. They are NOT the quality of the mats that I have seen posted here but might be a low-cost option. LEMAX also has a "water" mat that might be good for navy war games. They also have brick and cobblestone mats.

Cost is around 12.00 each. Some are on-sale in Michaels craft/art stores.

I think Joe & 1879fanatic have used the Lemax moss mat and found that it shed too much. I do like their cobblestone mats though, great for ceremonial scenes.

The moss does shed A LOT... I mounted the mat on a piece of double honeycomb cardboard, and it makes it easy to move around without spilling the loose debris. I do like the look it gives, and I bought it for 5.99. Can't beat the price.
I have the water mat also, but have never used it. It;s too one dimensional for my RN surf launch missions:D I'll give it a whack sometime and see how it goes.
Overall- my opinion is if you dont want to spend a lot, the moss matt is a must have, Just keep the Dyson handy:eek:

Yeah...I almost bought the grass mat but found that it was shedding in the package. As I paint my figures I'm concerned that the stuff will get in my paint. Perhaps vacuuming the mat would work.

Oooo, I wouldn't do that, you might not have much "moss" left. Why not just seal it by over spraying with some scenic cement or even hair spray? Besides you are not going to put your painted figures on the mat wet are you?

No no! It's that there is enough dust in air as it is plus the static nature of the "glass."

A spray might work...thanks!
