While reading the recent article in Smithsonian about the Lincoln movie, I came across this article, Lincoln's Contested Legacy. Although the article is three years old, it's still an interesting read.

Brad,
I did read it but found another article on same page more interesting.

It was about people who had been due to sail on the Titanic but missed the trip.Included :

Marconi (who was on Lusitania when it sank)
J P Morgan
Hershey the chocolate guy
Vanderbuilt (who went down with Lusitania).

and then the many thousands who claimed to have missed out.

Regards
Brett

Brad,

The article was interesting reading, but I think it is aimed at advanced readers of Lincoln. My knowledge of the life and times of Abraham Lincoln leaves much to be desired. I read my first book on Lincoln at the age of 8 years. All I can remember from this short biography is that he had to walk 4 miles to school and back everyday and was assassinated. I tried "The Man behind the Myths" by Stephen B. Oates which I found a tough read. Perhaps, I should have started with "Absence of Malice" by the same author. I could do with a recommendation of a concise Biography of Lincoln in a narrative style, leaving out discussions on controversial issues.

Raymond,

If you're looking for a concise biography, I would try Abraham Lincoln by George McGovern (around 200 pages). It's part of the American Presidents Series and published by Times Books.

There's also Abraham Lincoln by James MacPherson, a well known Civil War scholar (Battle Cry of Freedom). It's less than 100 pages and might whet your appetite for more.

Brad,

Thanks very much for your recommendations.

I shall look at these titles on Amazon which sometimes allows a preview of the content page.

Raymond :)
