Hi All,

I didn't find any previous thread on this movie so am starting one here. I just saw this movie again after a long hiatus. It starred Gary Cooper. Surprisingly, I didn't find it that entertaining. The plot was quite plodding, involving mostly male bonding and there weren't any really exciting fight sequences. The lancers on parade and field exercises manuevered well, though. Just my thoughts.

Hi Victor,

Havent seen this one for a long time. But I do have the book which is an interesting read. Otherwise I agree that the movie was one of the better ones on India.

Like Dave, I haven't seen this movie in a long time, but since I am a sucker for movies on the British in India, I remember liking it. This show, like Gunga Din, used to be a Saturday morning standard when I was a kid, but it is probably 30+ years since I have seen it so I just don't recall much of it beyond Gary Cooper and Franchet Tone. If I remember correctly Cooper dies in the end as the hero. Like I said, I remember liking it. -- Al

Hello Al and Dave,

Looks like I'm outvoted. But surely, Al, with a monicker like Lancer, you won't be biased, would you?....:)

Trust me, it was quite trying....:) and Gary Cooper died in the end (of boredom too, I think).

I think its one of those movies you really need to be in the mood for! Of course my wife would agree Victor that movies like this are way too boring for her...

You got me, Victor. My moniker was picked because of my memories of such movies and my Somerset Indian Lancers. :wink2:^&grin -- Al

I too haven't seen the movie in many years but this thread made me pull the book off of my shelves for quick look. As I remembered the book was a memoir describing life in India. The book did a good job of doing that but the Hollywood movie may have tried too hard and fallen short, I really don't remember but would like to see it again.
