Upon departing Dover Castle, after finally parting ways with Howard and Jenny, who headed off to tour another of the magnificent castles which seem to inhabit virtually every hill or promontory in Great Britain, Clive and I paid our respects at the Battle of Britain Memorial. Its simple design, a plaque with a poem written by a pilot from 616 Squadron, a wall with the names of everyone who flew for the Allies in the battle, and white stone walkways in the shape of a three blade propeller, with the statue of a young pilot seated on the hub, looking out over the White Cliffs of Dover for the return of his squadron mates, is remarkably touching. It would be a very callous soul who was not affected by this hallowed place.
