I remember seeing a war movie in the 1970's but have not seen it since. I remember some scenes from it and a little of the story. If I remember right, it takes place in the Philippines. An american officer is sent to a combined American/Filipino unit to check out its leader who is up for a metal. (I think Metal of Honor.) The officer and the leader of the unit don't hit it off to well with each other. The american officer winds up going on a mission with them to scout for remaining Japanese units. A few of the scenes I remember are: (1) The unit is on a hill and spot a large group of Japanese in a valley I think heading for some unsuspecting U.S. units. The commander of the unit orders several snipers in the unit to open up on the Japanese to draw their attention to them. It works and the unit finds themselfs in a running battle with the far larger Japanese unit. (2) The unit is close to being overtaken by the japanese and a few of the men stay behind to slow them down. (I think they are wounded.) One of the men has two dogs who he sics on the Japanese. (3) The final battle has the survivors of the unit making a last stand in a building.(I think its a Church.) The leader of the unit is either killed or wounded. Before they are over run, some american units arrive and wipe out what is left of the japanese. That is all I can remember. It was a good movie and I saw it several times when I was in my teens.
Anyone know the title of this movie or who starred in it? I would appreciate any info.
