Can someone explain to me the evolution of the tracks for the M4?

Originally each track link appears to have had a rectangular rubber pad similar to the M3.

In more pictures than not though I see the tracks with a cleat added to each rubber pad. I assume this was done to improve traction.

M3 for comparison

During its production the Sherman (and the chassis variants) had a number of different tracks available. Part of the variation was the need to conserve rubber, part was the search for the best tracks for cross-country performance. There were so many sub-contractors in Sherman production that some versions were based on what could be produced as quickly as possible.

They break down into general categories of rubber block, rubber chevron (both of the preceding were actually rubber vulcanized over a "skeleton" of steel tube), steel chevron, and all-steel types.

For full details see;

But basically, the US Army preferred the rubber tracks, first the rubber block and then the rubber chevron. Other types were used as available.

Gary

Wow!

Great information Gary, thanks

You know me too well. ;)

2 to 3 years down the road, should HB progresses as it should, i will want to check on the serial no of all the Gold Edition items you bought.

I will not be surprised if all your items, from the Gold edition Tiger to what-have-you, will all have serial no. 001.

Take care Frank.

Sincerely,

nasir kasmani.
