Hi All,
I've recently found a 20 pieces Pipes and Drums of the Black Watch but without indication of the maker.
Any idea ? Or are these castings ?
Thanks for your assistance !
Michel

The style of the paint job suggests to me that they're homecasts and painted by a collector. Especially the job on the eyes, and the plaid. They almost look like castings from the Prins August molds. The bases have the basic shape that the Prins August bases have, of a rectangle with rounded-over edges. But I may be mistaken.

What do the undersides of the bases look like? Can you see two points where pegs in the figures' feet passed through the base, and were cut off and either soldered or glued? That would be another indication that they may be Prins August castings.

Prost!

Hi Brad,
Thanks for the information.
Not trace of 2 pegs under the bases. No inscription either.
Cheers,
Michel

Hmm...we'll have to see what some of our other toy soldier sleuths think. It's a good puzzle.

Prost!

If you think some other pictures would be useful, just let me know!

Hi Guys,

I've been pondering these guys and was thinking they could be either Ducal Repaints or from a company called Asset, who are a small operation out of Canada I believe. I would not bet the house on this ID but that that best I can come up with.

Maybe some more pictures of them would be helpful.

All the best

Dave

Dave,
I thought Ducal at first until I looked at my sets - all the Ducals have a thinner 8 sided base. the only Asset toy soldiers I am aware of are from a UK company and their soldiers have a thin square base with very distinct corners.

I have drawn a blank with these soldiers. They might be castings painted by a very talented individual.

Hi Guys,

Yes I would tend to agree that they were home done they may well be castings of Ducal figures with a rougher base. Thats why I was really unsure of their origin. I also agree that they were very well done aside from the eyes on one of the figures. That said I doubt I can paint them any better.

Anyway I hope someone else will wade in a lend us a hand on this ID.

Would really like to see some more photos of the grouping

All the best

Dave

Hi All,
Thanks for your comments so far !

These are definitely not Ducal figures. They are more detailled and finely scupted than Ducal. And this not to say something against Ducal figures, if you have a look at my albums you'll know I love them!

REgarding Asset figures, I thought (but not that sure anymore) that they have a mark under the base.

I will try yo post some more pics soon.

thansk !!

Michel

Ps : I've some other bands I'm not quite sure of the maker I will post them later

As promised, some other pictures. Of the whole band this time. Michel

It is possible that they are either Steadfast or RNG (Richard Newth Gibbs).
Steadfast are still in production but I am not sure whether their bases were marked or not. RNG ceased trading some years ago due to Richard's ill health. His figures were definitely not marked.

Just been to RP World today, makers of Steadfast. To the best of my knowledge, they are all marked on the underside (at least all the ones I have are).

I agree with Simon, all Steafast I've seen were marked. But maybe I recognized them as Steadfast because they were marked  (so no big evidence here).
I've never heard about RNG...could you tell us more about this maker ?
Thanks
Michel

Enjoyable as always, thanks. Nothing particularly new that I could see, but it's fun browsing around all the bits trays, and picking up the odd bit here and there. Met with a couple of other forum members there, David from TM Terrain and John (Beating retreat) I managed to last out just over an hour before the kids whining got the better of me. When you've got a 5 and 7 year old, positioned danger close to dexion racking, filled to the brim with row after row of painted soldiers lined up like dominos, there's only so much the heart can take. Picked up a few castings - Zulu and 24th, a small Britains terrain piece and also some Fields of Conflict Iraq war sets. They're in dire need of a repaint, but there ain't that much in this era to choose from.

I thought your youngsters were very well behaved, your little girl is a real sweetie.

Simon,
I understand what you mean : mine are 7 and 6 ! And they'd really like playing with my soldiers...
They often 'help' me to unpack incoming parcels and I must say they are much more cautious at that time than with their own toys :)

Thats a name from the past! I did some painting for him some years ago.
