Making Donations for Hurricane Harvey (1 Viewer)

You're right Sammy. We're only making drops but like you said every little bit helps.

One of our local animal shelters, St Hubert's Giralda, received a plane load of abandoned dogs from Houston a couple of nights ago so we will be making a donation to them too. We've adopted two cats from them.

I pledged $100 to the Cowboy's drive...
like you said...
not much...
but it made me feel better...

got hit hard on $$$ this week...
had to replace an a/c unit...cost me $5,500...outside condensing unit and air handler in attic...
had to replace a gas water heater...$1,000...
need to repair/replace wooden door/frame in bathroom under attic where water heater was...
it's warped with leaky water from heater...
need roof repair...some shingles...
I have flood...wind and homeowners...
I buy all the insurance...

the a/c was an electrical surge...
energy provider never pays off on that...
not covered under flood or wind...

water heater was a coincidence...
not covered anyway...

damage from water heater is less than deductible...

shingle repair is less than deductible...

I'm taking about an $8,000 hickey on this...

for somebody that had no flooding...that's a lot...

Wow..that's a ton of coin Mike, sorry to hear, but as you said, it surely could have been worse.

That's tough Mike. It never ceases to amaze how nature can overturn our lives. In Sandy we lost a small part of our roof and a few trees were knocked down but none hit the house. We were lucky.

The "Hollywood elite" and entertainment industry has now pledged or donated almost 100 million dollars!
On the road to redemption?

The response has been overwhelming to Harvey. In the hustle and bustle society we live in, people may not seem approachable or friendly but when a tragedy of this proportion takes place, we try to pitch in any way we can, some do it like the Cajun Navy did, some with donations and so forth.

As mayor of the Village of Rosyln Harbor, we partnered with Long Island Cares, a local charity, and opened Village Hall as a collection point for non-perishable goods which are being sent by Long Island cares to the Houston Area. My family and I donated money and goods for the relief of our friends and compatriats in South East Texas.

My wife and I made another cash donation, again it isn't much but hopefully it will help someone along the way.

Sammy:

Every bit helps and it all adds ups.

And, it may not seem like much to you, but to the person on the receiving end, the gesture alone is everything.

it really does add up...

they are running donation drive announcements all over the radio/tv's down here...

saying that a measly $1.00 donation...

can be stretched to feed 3 people...

one night after Ike...

it was about 6PM...hot...no a/c...no tap drinking water...no land line...limited electrical power from my breakers...

unbelievably hot!!

Galveston was so virtually deserted...a ghost town...

hardly anyone was back in town...not one person on my street to be seen...

but I was here...

I have a 2 story house...upstairs undamaged...so I could sleep upstairs...

I was ripping out sheet rock and emptying all my furniture to the curb...with a friend...

when the Salvation Army food truck came through my neighborhood...

announcing free food over their loudspeaker...

we were starving...sick of ham or peanut butter sandwiches...which I ate for 3-4 weeks til some grocery stores finally opened up 15-20 miles from me...

and we got a hot meal off the truck...my first hot meal in weeks...

it was 2 fried chicken legs...some pinto beans...a cold pasta salad in a sealed cup and a sealed cup of fruit cocktail...

it was hot and like the best food ever...

I was very grateful to get it...these people would be too...
