Everybody knows about the horrors of the Somme 1st July 1916, of the men of the British Army being mowed down as they crossed no mans land and the failure to achieve the positions the high command desired. But what is often overlooked is that the Manchesters attacking near Mametz achieved their goal by taking the Danzig Alley trenches.

Perhaps what is also overlooked is the pitiful horror of the fighting that ensued there once the M's had made it to the trench. Many German soldiers already wounded were bayoneted or shot on the spot , whilst others wounded down in the dugouts were killed with grenades. Then began the awful, nerve shattering business of bombing their way along the trench and fighting round the fire bays, done mainly by expert grenade throwers without rifles this was a task that would surely shred the nerves of many of these young men in their first major battle.

I thought how good it would be to have figures to make up a bombing party. As they would be single figures this would allow the collector to have a bombing party size of his choosing. Figures could include a grenade thrower hurling grenade, another behind him perhaps holding grenades or preparing to throw, and perhaps a riflemen to cover them. I also thought how cool it would be if K&C could give us some hand to hand fighting sets for the Trenches, the Commando range has shown just how well these can be done and I'm sure these could bring home the drama , horror, and life or death intensity as young men from two nations fought for their lives.

What do you think guys?

Interesting idea as well as an interesting discussion of trench fighting/ Had to be horrific to be a grunt in those days makes me very glad I was Cavalry/Armor.

It must have been Dave, fighting round those fire bays, with bombs and hand guns etc, they must have had some stones.
