Hi All,

I have decided to share with you all an experience I had with repairing a Marlborough Durbar Elephant set. Specificly set number D62 Maharaja of Orcha on State Elephant. I found this set on ebay and was thrilled because I got it for a great price. But thats where the story gets a little twisted. The vendor sold me what he thought was set D62 but what it was, was a mix of two elephant sets, D62 and D51 the Maharaja of Mysore. But the story gets worse.

The elephant was totally knocked apart in shipping. It came in 5 parts. I am sure that most folks would have gone mental at this point and if I didnt have 4 kids who drove me there a long time ago I probably would have! But since these beauties are getting more and more difficult to find I decided not to return him and make the necessary repairs to bring the set back to what it should look like. Now the Head and body were separated, body was in 2 pieces and the boards that the state mace bearers stand upon were broken off the side of the elephant. So once I got the elephant reassembled with a dab of jb quick weld the work began. I had to match and repaint the seams where the parts come together. I then used a dremel tool to remove the plug ends of the broken off boards and replaced these with cut down steel nails to fit the holes and shaped them with millput , repainted them after attaching the planks the mace bearers stand upon. Got that done and then discovered that I had the wrong Howdah as well. Yes this project has gotten more complicated and aggravating as it proceeded. So as you can imagine I started and stopped several times while we were living in Europe and after a few hours work here in the states I have finally gotten it back together.

So before I came home I ordered the correct Howdah from Marlborough and they sent me the casting for a really reasonable rate I just hope they come out of probate and are back at it soon since the untimely passing of the owner. So here is where I will insert some photos of the howdah I received.

First photo is the front of the howdah and the detail of it.

Next we have the front with the seats

then we have the entire set up

Final photo is of the body of the howdah. easy to envision how it comes together.

The next pictures will show it in the process of being painted.

Page two painting the howdah.

Fortunately I started off in this game as a model painter and of course back yard warrior who made soldiers from a casting set and had a blast painting them and grinding them up in my quest to be the next back yard Patton... Ah the memories. So I took the howdah parts and sat down and primed them before painting them. I used a nice matte tan colored paint to make the painting easier, since the howdah is all sliver with gold highlighting. It must have been a stunning sight on parade in 1903 Delhi!

So in this series of photos you can see the progress of the painting as its been a long while since I made and painted a model (1977 or 78) I took my time and used a magnifying glass that is lighted.

Here are the pieces in progress:

Page 4 is final paint and assembly of the howdah. I took my time with the painting and detail work so it would look correct from the photo guide I have of a complete figure courtesy of my good friend and fellow Durbar addict Pat Wade.

Anyway here are the final phtos of the howdah before finishing ti with a coat of glossy clear coat.

One last photo of the complete set up. It needs to have some more touch up done to the elephant and I am missing a servant and parasol for the howdah but I will get my hands on them one of these days...

Enjoy as it is a lovely set

Thanks for showing your photos of your process, Dave! You had shown me the finished howdah, but I enjoy seeing how we each work on our pieces. All finished and assembled with the elephant, it looks great!

Did you happen to take any photos of your work to repair the elephant, too? That would be interesting to see.

And isn't it fun to paint your own, too?

Prost!

Hi Brad, I thought I had some photos of the damaged elephant but I cant locate them. They may be on the small digital camera I used to use a ton but I am not sure which box that ended up in during the most recent move. I will post them if I find them.

To answer your question painting the castings is very satisfying! I am working a couple of other projects now because it was great getting the set restored.

Hi Dave,
I am significantly impressed with your work. Your painting of the howdah is outstanding! The elephant and the howdah look brand new! Excellent work! {bravo}}

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)

That was a fun thread to read and enjoyed it thoroughly, like I told you, it got me to thinking about getting back to painting soon! :)

Hey Chris,

Glad you enjoyed it! I am really glad I was able to find the time to get this back together. That is always going to be the issue trying to find time especially with the kids and moving a lot.

Dave
