I thought you all might like to see the progress of this. It is a painting that I have commissioned from the artist Matthew Ryan. I had never heard of him, but was introduced to his work by Andreas (Anadana) and just had to have one. I bought a few prints from the website, but have always wanted a painting of William Marshal and thought Matthew Ryan was the perfect artist to do it.
Here is his website: http://matthewryanhistoricalillustrator.com/page21.html

I'll post pictures of the progress as I see them.

This first image is the concept sketch. I wanted a young William Marshal as he's just been retained by Eleanor of Aquitaine to train her sons. The scene shows the fifteen year old Young King Henry being schooled in the art of sword and shield combat by his recently appointed master-in-arms William Marshal. The year here is 1170, Marshal would have been around twenty two or twenty three at the time. The painting will also show Queen Eleanor sitting in the background reading from a book while a young boy (the future Richard I - Lionheart) sits on the floor with a wooden sword looking on intently and enthusiastically at the sight before him. Beyond the "setup", I have decided not to have much input. I'm a big fan of letting those commissioned do as they seem will be best.

This second image is the close-up study of the young Richard, looking on, attempting to lift his sword.

These are just some of Matthews other paintings so you can see why I thought he'd be great to do this!

He also does some very cool "manuscript style" work!

I looked at his website. Does he just do the Medieval period or perhaps Renaissance?

You bet Zach! William Marshall is one of my all-time heroes, as he was the very first Knight I ever painted. I will watch progress with interest. jb

What a great idea, Zach. If prints are made of this - I would buy one. Btw: i think you are very photogenic and I would consider getting myself painted into the tableau. This would be consistent with medieval practices. Not sure about the beard, perhaps JB could chime in, but that full beard of you would probably make you a pagan.

He's a pretty shadowy figure is Will - even though we do know a fair bit about his prowess as a knight on the tournament merry-go-round. He also Saved Queen Eleanor from kidnap, or worse, , when he was young - which undoubtedly was a great factor in his eventual elevated life via a good arranged marriage - and becoming Marshall of England. I have never seen an illustration of him depicted with a beard, and assume Eleanor, baby Richard didn't have one - so your choice of person for Zach to be depicted as in the portrait, would seem to be limited - unless of course, Zach shaves it off - to get included?

Why not as William himself - he is frequently depicted with a moustache?

This is an interesting piece I spotted recently: jb
