As most of you know I am a collector of American Civil War. I have seen several Union figures (mostly Britains) being sold with the word "sack coat" in the title. For example: http://www.hobbybunker.com/products/union-infantry-in-sack-coat-charging-no5-single-figure-31126

Now I was wondering if the term sack coat just refers to the normal coat worn by Union Infantry or is it something special? Thanks! :)
Also feel free to share about other coats as well haha.

Sack coats were the standard issue jackets the Federal Army wore, shell jackets were worn by the Confederates.

Union troops such as the famed "Iron Brigade" wore frock coats, which were longer than sack coats. Some Confederates also wore them, Hoods Texans had them at Antietam, some Alabama regiments had them too if I am not mistaken.

Hope this helps.

Thanks so much, Warrior! I also found some more information on the web as well.
