TCM and AMC are doing their usual weekend long salute to the military by showing war or related type movies 24-7 thru Monday. Lots of good stuff on. Too numerous for me to list but take a look if you have time. -- Al

I was watching Midway while eating my lunch and I remember when that movie first came out, the theater seats used to vibrate with the explosions. It was some kind of new movie effect.

I just watched the last few minutes of Green Berets. Shockingly bad {eek3} The vegetation looks like something out of my backyards, not Vietnam. I see Aldo Ray was in there. By that point, time has obviously passed him by. I see David Janssen was in there also. Probably not one of his finest moments either.

Just a horrible movie all around.

Loved the scene in the "jungle" when the one soldier gets ambushed and they find him dead with enemy soldiers all around him and Wayne bellows "He took them all with him, or they wouldn't have left this" and he smashes the Marx toy M16 across a tree and breaks it in half....................

When I was watching the piece I did, I was reminded of what you say, "there's 15 minutes I can't get back."

Green Berets is now being followed by a great movie, "The Sand Pebbles."

I haven't watched Green Beret in years but from what I remember, how could those guys pass their fitness test?

Good point. John Wayne is a bit corpulent in the movie.

Later tonight on TCM after the Battle of the Bulge is a movie called, "The Tanks Are Coming". Anybody heard of this movie? I've seen tons of war movies, but this is new to me. Btw, I like the Green Berets. The battle at the outpost was great, but the movie faded at the end. Just like the Battle of Bulge, the beginning was good, but the ending sucked. I especially like the part when the LT surrendered to the German patrol and the SGT says, I could have taken them all out with a couple of grenades or something like that.

Funny you mentioned "The tanks are coming" as I vaguely recall seeing it as a kid on a Saturday afternoon if it's the one I'm thinking of.

I DVR'd Battle of the Bulge as it's on TCM, no commercials and it's the three hour version, I've only seen that version once, it has some extra footage in it; it's worth watching to see if you can spot the additional footage.

I also DVR'd "The tanks are coming", what the heck.

Wayne was 60/61 years old at the time he did this movie, long past active duty age for a US soldier. Bruce Cabot also had a part in this movie and you may remember him as the male lead in the original King Kong (1933). He was 64 when he did Green Berets. Star Trek's Sulu, George Takai, is in this movie as well. -- Al

Loved at the end how David Jansen quits the newspaper business and joins the Army, he was so inspired by what he saw that he decided at 74 to join up and fight the commies.

I remember as a kid seeing this movie at the theatre, it was a double feature along with "Zeppelin"; I thought "The Green Berets" was a WWII movie about the war in the Pacific. I remember when the observation tower gets hit and toppled over, my cousin yelled out "F TROOP!!" and the whole theater busted up with laughter...................

Have seen 'Here Come the Tanks' but darned if I remember much about it. Did get to see some other favorites this weekend like 'Attack' with Eddie Albert and Jack Palance, 'Steel Helmet', and 'Men in War', which along with Robert Ryan and Aldo Ray, also has a young Vic Morrow in it. Good shows. -- Al

I must say I have really enjoyed my day of sitting and relaxing watching war movies on TCM. Look forward to watching Patton in bed as I fall asleep. :D

I saw about half of "The Tanks Are Coming". I must have seen it as a kid, but don't remember it. It was kind of like an old fashioned "Fury" movie. Not bad.
