Men in War 1957 (1 Viewer)

I like old war movies. Like I said before, I like to hear the soldier's gear clanging around, canteens, rifles, etc. Porkchop Hill was on a few weeks ago, but I missed 90% of it. However, it reminded me about how much I liked that movie. Old movies always got the moral high ground lesson, like turning a deserter into a fighting man. I wonder if it influenced a generation of kids to be moral?

Interestingly, one of the soldiers (Aldo Ray) was wearing a 1st Cavalry Div insignia on his sleeve. In the movie, he was driving his colonel away from the battlefield.

I looked this up on the web and it appears that this Division had a bad reputation then for not fighting well. I think I heard a reference to a "Naktong river" which is mentioned on this website.

I have watched Pork Chop Hill so often I can recite the dialogue. It is one of my Top 5 favorite war movies. Oddly enough, or perhaps predictably, one of my other favorites, the 1930 All Quiet on the Western Front, is directed by Lewis Milestone, director of Pork Chop Hill. The man could make a great war film. -- Al

Victor, sorry to digress with the Pork Chop Hill movie. I remember Men in War having to run through an artillery barrage and the enemy would sneak up and knife the US soldiers one-by-one. Didn't Aldo Ray die in the end helping the platoon? Another bad guy turning to be good.

I loved Pork Chop Hill.

Aldo Ray didn't die in Men IN War (MIW). In MIW, basically a platoon of GIs led by Robert Ryan was trapped behind enemy lines. They commandeered a jeep (Aldo Ray and his shell-shocked colonel) to carry the ammo and took a stroll in the open through enemy territory. Of course they were stalked by the Commies. One straggler, who stopped to sit down to smell the flowers and started to place a few on his helmet, was knifed by the enemy. Aldo Ray was then sent back to investigate. He quickly realised what had happened and then did the same as the straggler except that he turned around at the last moment and shot the enemy.

His character was not supposed to be bad, just cynical and questioning of Ryan's slightly overbearing leadership. In the end, they both took on a hill and conquered the enemy with grenades and a flamethrower.
