Thanks everyone for taking the time to comment. I found it surprisingly difficult to find a decent backdrop. People do not seem to take photographs of ships from side on, preferring, it would seem to always have the bows in view. What I did learn was just how valuable any 'non - military' type figure is when trying to plan a diorama.
