Hello all,
I'm new to Treefrog and specifically to the Britains Forum. Britains are and have been my main hobby off and on, beating out Major Matt Mason and GI Joe (although my brother and I still have the latter two). Having said that, I'm no authority on Britains, having been in and out of it depending on the demands of family and career.
One "authority" in Victoria (I'm now in Ottawa, gradually moving my collection there) did look at my collection last year and, after giving me a fright by confirming that some smell was just dust and not lead rot , said I had no rare or unusual figures. I suppose this is understandable, since the majority of my vintage pieces were bought from other collectors.
To answer Dave's (forgot his user name - 1st lieutenant) questions on Britains, I have a variety of vintage, plastic, new metal and limited editions - probably about 500-800. I have never documented them but I want to, at least for insurance purposes. I also have some vintage, modern, and plastic zoo, farm, as well as the the riding stable.
When limited editions started coming out, I tried to buy them all, but then Britains started producing more than one a year my wallet couldn't keep up. I also missed the Cameron Highlanders, which was a ashame given the price it goes for now. I think I have all for 1984-1996, and then sporadic ones after.
I really enjoy Britains ceremonial, especially bands. The Deli Durbar is superb. I don't have any and regret not getting them when they first came out. The prices for 2006 limited edtions are so high, I haven't bought them yet, and I hope they go down in price in future.
Its interesting to compare the prices for vintage and modern Britains. I notice that some of the modern ones I bought at full price in UK pounds 10-15 years ago are now on eBay for much less. One can also get decent ROAN standard sets for less than some modern sets, which makes deciding where to put one's limited money a challenge.
Recently, I have purchased 3 retired Britains armoured vehicles (Sherman, Panzer IV, German half-track) at good prices (US$25 each, excluding shipping) from the US dealer BT Soldiers. Some dealers really mark these down when they retire them and want to move stock. So i will be watching these for a while.
I'm also interested in completing my collection of Britains catalogues. I'm always shocked when I see the prices on eBay, especially for original or ones prior to 1965. I recently bought 1917 (1968 reprint), 1966, 67, 69. I also want to get all the trade ones post 1971, since I have mostly the pocket ones I picked up as a boy.
That gives you an idea of my collection and iinterests. Sorry for the length.
