I love a sunburnt country,

A land of sweeping plains,

Of ragged Mountain ranges,

Of drought and 'FLOODING' rains,

I love her far horizons,

I love her jewel sea,

Her beauty and her 'TERROR",

This wide brown land for ME.

"My Country" a poem about the Land Down Under and which describes the Country at the moment.

Certainly very apt given your state is going under water and very distressing to so many. Blimey when it rains, it pours. Next we will be experiencing bushfires. Robin.

Still sounds like a fine country to proudly hail from !
Despite difficulties, I don't hear no whining.

As I read it, I thought it was about America; it has the sound of poems written before patriotism was associated with fascism by some. It sounds like the text of "America the Beautiful", for example. I'm curious to know if it was ever set to music.

And the similarities make sense, because we Americans and you Australians come from similar roots, and have some similar experiences since our great-grandfathers left Britain and found their new homes. We're still cousins.

Prost!
Brad

From what I have read about the poem it praises Australia but Howard’s line seems to imply something else, or am I missing something here?

Australia being hit by extreme weather systems was my impression.
What was it you thought you were missing Brad ? Easy with US being such a big country with everything that goes on there
I suppose as to overlook that climate change does effect other countries to various degrees like Pacific Islands nations being most concerned with rising sea levels.

The poem doesn’t seem to have anything with the problems that Australia may now face unless Howard’s sentence was more of a wistful nature.

I’m not sure what the size of the US has to do with climate change as this is an issue the whole world faces. The size of the country doesn’t matter.

Gentlemen,

Please do not try to see beyond what the poem states. Australia is the greatest and luckiest country in the whole world. IMO. The poem simply came to mind when I was out with my neighbors cleaning out storm water drains and preparing for the storms to come. In the last two years my Country and especially my State has suffered from drought, bushfires, covid, lockdowns and now extreme flooding. Enough to drive anyone to the brink of insanity. But, being resilient, we soldier on. I have found that disasters seem to bring out the best in Aussies. Words like "Can I give you a hand cobber" or "Do you need any help mate" have been echoing up and down our Street.

Stay safe and Happy Collecting, Cheers Howard
