My Early Life (A Roving Commision) by Winston S. Churchill
I enjoy this book each time I read it. It covers the life of "Young Winston" from his birth in 1874 to circa 1902.
Churchill vividly describes his less than happy childhood, his difficulty with examinations at Harrow (1888) and entry to Sandhurst (1893) on his third try. He is commissioned into the 4th Hussars as a cavalry subaltern in 1894.
In his inimitable style, he narrates his service with 4th Hussars in India (1895-96) and his adventures as a journalist in Cuba and the North West Frontier (1897). He continues on to the Sudan (1898) and brazenly rides in the Charge of the 21st Lancers at Omdurman.
His successful escape from captivity in the Boer War (1899) propels him to the recognition he needs for his entry into the rough and tumble of British politics. He enters Parliament as MP for Oldham (1900) on his second try.
Churchill ends his book circa 1902 before his marriage to Clementine Hozier in 1908.
This is highly recommended reading.
Best, Raymond.
