Hi there, Me again:D

Just wondering if any one knew of any war DVDS or videos, that are set in the Napoleonic era or timeline?:)

I have Waterloo on video, I also have Master and Commander on DVD, Mutiny on the Bounty, and I have seen all of the Sharpe Series, but if anyone has any other ones, could you please tell me and I will try and get them on Amazon:D:confused::eek::D

Thanks All!:D

Just mentioned over in another thread: "The Duellists", with Harvey Keitel and David Carradine, an excellent movie. It follows two hussar officers through the time from around 1806 until after Waterloo, as one obsessed with a perceived insult (Keitel) pursues his personal vendetta against the other (Carradine). Uniforms and civilian costumes, and the settings, look spot-on. Recommend highly!

Prost!

Seen it:Dthought it was not too bad;):D

Also, Hollywood's "War and Peace" from 1956, with Henry Fonda, Audrey Hepburn, Mel Ferrer, Herbert Lom (as Napoleon), and a host of other character actors from the time. Maybe not the best interpretation of a long, long novel, but I think it's an enjoyable film.

Prost!

Great question. You have the benefit of me just having finished my homework on this one:

The first and one and only:
Napoléon (1927) by Abel Gance. Best seen on a square in Paris during summer with a philamonic orchestra playing the score.

http://www.amazon.com/Napoleon-Engl...ef=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1242835408&sr=1-5

Long and pretty detailed:
Napoleon (TV Miniseries 2003)

http://www.amazon.com/Napoleon-TV-M...ef=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1242836193&sr=1-2

And even longer than that (with unrivaled scenes from the battle at Borodino 1812), but it has to be the Russian version:
War and Peace / Voina I Mir by Bondarchuk [Special Edition] [5 DVD Set] [1968] [Language: Russian, English]
http://www.amazon.com/War-Peace-Voi..._m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0R6EB97BJV7YF93VKYVN

Note that according to Wikipedia, this "film took seven years to produce and cost over US$100 million. If inflation is taken into account, a film of this magnitude would cost over US$700 million today, making War and Peace the most expensive film ever made." It also won the Academy Award - Best Foreign Language Film in 1969. With a duration of about 8 hours, it should keep you occupied for awhile.:D

Good recommendations mate. You inspired me to finally get the Bondarchuk version which seems to have come out in different formats. This one looked the most promising after reading some of the reviews, e.g.
http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCompare/warandpeace.htm ,
on the differences and is cheaper.
http://www.amazon.com/War-Peace-Spe...ef=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1242838811&sr=1-3

Then of course there is the 1972 PBS version which I have not seen but does have some very good reviews.

This thread raises and excellent point; you'd think a war like the Napoleonic War would have many, many movies based on events from that war. It lasted close to 20 years and I would think is very popular in Europe and in the Uk, and there are like what, a million WWII movies, so why so few re The Napoleonic War?

And please don't string me up for this, but I rented Waterloo via Netflix this week as I haven't seen it in about five years; that said, man has the shine worn off the apple for me on this one. I thought is was painful to watch aside from the French Cavalry charge (overhead shots of the British squares were most impressive).

A new version needs to be made...........

Idea (i) Why dnt we get all the able Forum members to meet somewhere maybe in the summer, and make maybe a 20 minute movie of a Napoleonic battle:D

That way, my dream of living in a time as such would come true, I could be the drummer boy?:D
Preferrably a Coldstream Guard, but what the heck?
Could be the next Blockbuster :D

Hey, we can give it a try at least?;):D

Rob could be Wellington:D
Brad could maybe be Napoleon, although he's need to fight it out with Ron;)

Louis could be Uxbridge?:D

I'm getting good;)

All the Scotts could be Coldstream Guards!:D

If you liked Sharpe then "Hornblower" is the Naval version of the Napoleonic sport of French Butt kicking! :D

The most recent version, with Ioan Gruffudd and Robert Lindsay? I agree, that's a great version of the series.

Prost!

Well I think we would be a tad light on troop strength. Besides, with respect, Louis does not strike me as a horseman, maybe he could be Picton.;):D Since Uxbridge lost a leg that day, I'm not sure I really want the job either. Of course at the first sound of cannon, either one of my horses would likely be back in Brussels, with or without me.:D

That would be great but undoubtedly a very expensive and somewhat risky proposition for American audiences, unfortunately.:( Perhaps it could be done in one of the former Russian states. Maybe the BBC will understake something for the 200th anniversary.

There were some Prussians there, too, you know! You need a Blücher (he said, clearing his throat and pointing to himself)

I would like to se Waterloo made in the same style as Gettysburg use a lot of re-enactors to lower the production cost.
thats the only way it could be made and maybe even turn a profit and Ted Turner would have to have a cameo .
it would also have to go for 3hrs and NO damm ballroom dancing.
You are right Spitfrnd American Audiences might not go for it.
look at The Alamo (2004) that was not that bad but a total flop at the box office.
I think even "Dude were's my car" made more money

Hey, "Dude where's my car" is an American film classic.........;) The Alamo was very good IMO, but you are right, it tanked at the box office. I'd have thought all the Marx "Alamo" playset collectors here in the US (there's what, 50,000, 60,000 of them?) would have turned out in droves to see that one and their heroes. We Americans have this weird fascination with The Alamo, the same goes for Custers Last Stand...................

Jeff

Oh yes, I have seen that a couple of times, seen the one where Hornblower takes command of a French merchant ship, and the ship sinks and all the men have to get into a longboat, and the French captives kind of mutiny and take the pistols off the men, but Hornblower gets his own back;)

Also seen a bit of the one where the British go to France with a Regiment of French soldiers and Hornblower needs to either hold, or blow up the bridge...Then I went to bed:eek::eek::(:D

I was in WH Smith's yesterday and I spotted some Sharpe books, £6.99 each, Including Sharpe's Waterloo:eek::cool:but my mum might get them for my birthday she says:):D

I can recommend polish movie "Ashes", this is film from 2 series, made in 1960-70th, black-white, about one of the two polish young man who tried find his ways. The events pass through 1807-1812. One of them joined to the polish lancers and ook part in Spain war and in Somosierra too (in this film shown lancer's attack to spain artillery positions). Another one was in polish legion and took part in battles at Polish campaign in 1809. Some great battle scenes. I don't know about english language version, but I think it is must be able.
