Which important character of Napoléon's entourage was missing during the Emperor's coronation ceremony and where was that person?

There were several notables absent from the coronation. the most important was Napoleon's mother who had sided with Joseph in an argument about Josephine. Joeph was also absent and Lucien and Jerome had been banned from the service. I would imagine the answer you seek would be his mother who was deliberately travelling slowly in order to avoid the ceremony. Trooper

I was going to say his Mom, too. What's this about Lucien and Jerome?

Yes, his mom is the answer. Like Napoléon's siblings she disliked Josephine that she was AWOL and was in Italy during the coronation. Interesting enough despite her being not there, Napoléon asked David to add his mom on the famous coronation painting...Good answer from Trooper!

Yes, I had a look at images of the painting yesterday, and his mother was included....

The original in the Louvre is MOST impressive, well worth a 'sit down and rest the weary feet' stop.

I remember reading that Madam Mere was absent not only because she disliked Josephine but because she sided with her son Jerome over his short-lived marriage to Elizabeth Patterson. Napoleon forcibly had this marriage annulled and I think Lucien also took sides against Napoleon on this matter.

She was mad because Napoleon was not very nice to Lucien, or at least that what I heard{sm4}.

P.S. look at that painting for 30-40 min.
