It is well known that Hussars wore their hair tied in a knot or ribbon as well as plaited on the side (tied with ribbons). Besides looking cool, what was the actual purpose of this hair arrangement?

I'd suggest that they tied thier hair in ribbons, so it didn't get into their eyes because they wore thier hair long, not cutting it, following the tradition of the original Hungarian mounted cavalry.

The plaits either side of the face were weighted with a musket ball, which I suppose could give a sspare upply of shot, if they ran out, but I'd think it could cause some concern if the plait knocked into the cheek!!! ^&grin

That's my bet. Also, can anyone get me a diagram/detailed picture of this? Once I grow my hair out again (had to chop it all of for school), this is how I want my hair^&cool.

It's been a while since I've seen THE DUELISTS; that excellent movie about a feud between French Hussars. But, if I remember correctly Keith Carradine and Harvey Keitel wear their hair like this in the early scenes of the movie.

Yes Trooper, this is the correct answer. Congratulations!

This special hairdo was protecting them from sabre cuts! (I hope so...:wink2:)
