In the Napoleonic army who was wearing a helmet with steel cap, red horsehair crest and was armed with a pair of pistols and a spontoon? What was also the specific role of this individual?
I'd say it was the 2nd or 3rd Porte-Aigle or standard bearer of an Infantry Regiment.
They would be senior NCO's who defended the Eagle but I have found that they didn't always wear the steel helmet, they could have worn a bearskin or shako.
The eagle carrier would be an officer and so he was the 1st Porte-Aigle

Yes, that was a bit tricky, like I said, they didn't always wear the helmet.
By the way, who makes the figures in the image?
John
The 2 figures are made by Lead Army, please see items 5555 and 5556 at http://leadarmy.com/catalogue.asp?list=,49,90,&category=72&parent=49
Oh yes, I should have recognised it was Lead Army, I have 8 of those figures in my colletcion, they are very nice castings that I have painted, and I see they have a few new ones listed!
So, what's the next Question ??????
