I am back from a few long oversea trips (China and Europe) so I thought I should resume the "Nap trivia question of the day" with this one:

Who was the last known survivor of Napoléon's "Grande Armée"? What was his nationality and when did he die?

It's great to get another question to find an answer for.... and this is going to take some research....

Hope you had great trips and saw lots of diffenent things along the way..

By the way... did you meet the person in question while in Europe????? ^&confuse^&confuse^&confuse

Just joking :redface2::redface2::redface2:

He must have been an old man .... and seen lots of things in his life by being a part if the expedition into Russia in 1812 AND survived to tell the tale.

I'm looking forward to the answer....

Trooper,

yes I saw that entry too..... so you beat me by a whisker :) :)

By the way, I have found a site with the earliest photographs of Napoleonic veterans being a series of fifteen original sepia views of members of Napoleon’s army taken when these old soldiers were well into their 70’s and 80’s.

Check it out here http://dl.lib.brown.edu/libweb/collections/askb/veterans.php

regards,

John

A close second, then, would be Lt. Markiewicz of the Polish Light-Horse, who was born in Cracow in 1794 & was still living in 1902.

Jean Adrin...French...1797-1902 Trooper

Yes, I saw Jean Adrin's on Wikipedia but this is the only place where he is mentioned (I even searched on French sites but couldn't find any mention of him) while the other person (and he is not Polish or French) is mentioned on multiple sites (French and English) as the oldest.

ean Adrin is also mentioned on the following.
Borepatch--the oldest veterans and the hottest summers.
List of last surviving veterans of the Napoleonic Wars.
Ostatne weteran Wojen Napoleonskich
Living links to history.

Trooper, is the above a book (see underlined)? Because I cannot find anything on http://borepatch.blogspot.com/ regarding Napoleonics...I did a search on Ostatne weteran Wojen Napoleonskich and this search links to a Polish site that links to another French site which mentions the same guy I am referring to with no mention of Jean Adrin. Could you clarify your sources? Thanks!

I just entered "Jean Adrin" and these items turned up fourth and fifth on the list. I had another look to try to find the website addresses but they are cut off half way due to space. However, the Borepatch site list "the oldest veterans and the hottest summer" while the other entry is www. enotes.com/topic/list of last surviving veterans of the napoleonic wars.... Hope this helps. Trooper

I see but the 2 sites you are referring to are either pointing back to or a cut an paste of the Wikipedia article so this is the same info in triplicate. The name I have is #2 on the Wikipedia article (Geert Adriaans Boomgaard) but also mentioned on this 2 sites which are not a copy of the Wikipedia article: http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=5532255771&topic=15204 and http://derniersveterans.free.fr/napoleon1.html. So difficult to say which one is right for sure. When searching I also came across the following book on this very topic (I will order it since it looks pretty cool). If you look at one of the pages displays (see pics from the above link), this one shows in alphabetic order the veterans' names and Jean Adrin in not on the A list. Anyway it's amazing how long these people lived given what happened during this time period and the hardship they went through...Thanks!

Just received the book above! Fascinating! This one does mention that the last survivor of Napoleonic is the Dutch Gerrit Adriaans (1788-1899). There is no mention of Jean Adrin but it says that the last French veteran of the Napoleonic war was Victor Baillot (1793-1898).
