What made the shoes of Napoleon's infantry soldiers so special and what was the reason for it? Bonus question: how many sizes did they come in?

The shoes had gaiters ontop of them. They also had 2 pairs of them including nails and new soles for repair. They also had plenty of socks. Kinda vague I know, was I right ^&confuse{sm4} Oh, the reason why was because, marching won battles, shoes made marching possible!

Sorry guys but this is not the answer regarding what made them special. :rolleyes2:

This may surprise you but it is very difficult to find out about the shoes of Napoleonic French Infantry! Can we get a hint??^&confuse Not to big, there still has to be some mystery to it.

I know it's a difficult one since I had to roam some Nap French Websites to find it :rolleyes2: Hint: think about a special feature that would make things easier for the shoes to be mass produced! :wink2:

Sandor, I think you meant Straight-lasted. Anyway I will give you that one!

The left shoe and right shoe were indeed identical. This was achieving 2 things: easy mass production and easy replacement. They were coming in 3 sizes: S, M, L (240 mm, 270 mm et 300mm). They were also producing an Extra Small size and Extra Large size but only 3 pairs of these for every 100 pairs of regular size. The tip of the shoe was square, there was only 1 shoelace and they ware made in oiled cow hide. The weight of the shoe was 611 g.

Happy (Nap) feet! :wink2:
