In France there is still apparently a law restricting the usage of Napoléon as a name. What is this law about?

One cannot name a pig Napoléon. Do you have any more info on this?

You see that claimed a great deal but I have yet to see a citation to the actual law. I have also seen a least two French lawyers claim that no such law currently exists. It is true that the tyrant pig "Napoleon" was renamed Ceasar in the French version of Animal Farm but that could simply have been a marketing concession. Maybe one of our French friends can provide us with the cite of the law, if it does exist? I am sure the wording would be interesting since it would be virtually impossible to enforce with the exception of pigs in the public eye, like show pigs.

Harper- I am very much in agreement with you., which is why I have asked the very knowledgeable Grognard for his wisdom on the matter. While I agree with your statement, it is quiet possible this, or at least something like it, is one of what we call "Blue Laws" in New England.
All the best,

Correct Sandor, this is the law I was referring to. Now and to address yours and Harper's comments, we are on the same page. That is while I found many references to this law on French sites and there is even a French attorney talking about it on YouTube (but he too could not confirm his existence), I could not find any official proof that such law exists for sure. I even looked at the French "Journal Officiel" and other French administrative law sites and could not find any reference to it. Now you have to understand that not everything is searchable on the Web especially for texts that go back to a few hundred years...So we will have to live with the fact they it "may" exist :wink2:
