Hi Mirof, thanks but Jean-Baptiste Eblé didn't die during the crossing of the Berezina but nearly a month later in Kœnigsberg probably from exhaustion from the Russian campaign including the heavy toll he and his men suffered when building the 2 bridges on the Berezina which saved Napoleon's army (at least what was left of it). The Berezina is actually considered as a French victory since the Russians failed to stop and destroy Napoleon's army forces before they left Russia.
John, this is the correct answer!{bravo}} This is indeed Jacques Lazare Savettier de Candras, General of the 2nd brigade (1st and 2nd Swiss regiments - 1500 men strong) of the 9th infantry division of the 2nd Corps (Oudinot's). He was shot when defending with his brigade a strategic position on the right bank facing 10000 Russians. He is supposed to have been buried nearby in the convent of Zembin. He is the only French general who died in combat on this side of the Berezina.
