I'm looking for an American made movie about a platoon of German soldiers fighting the Russians. It was made maybe 30-years ago starred somebody like Lee Marvin or James Coburn. I can't remember. Anyway, I saw the last 10-minutes of Hell is for Heroes today (Steve McQueen, Bob Newhart) and forgot how great it was, that I going to buy a copy and hopefully that Russian front war movie. Help.

Is it Cross of Iron the name of the film ? Agree love hell for heroes ^&cool

Yes, it's called Cross of Iron, came out in 1977, Coburn is the main character, Sgt Steiner...........

Cross of Iron with Coburn. Fantastic Peckinpah movie.

Cross of Iron. Great movie. Read the book as well. Fantastic read.....

Cross of Iron is a great film for Coburn and the co-stars but it was a very troubled production. Basically the funding ran out/was pulled before the film was finished so the ending was filmed in one day and was something of a jumbled mess as a result. The book Cross of Iron, by Willi Heinrich is outstanding, as is his book on anti-partisan warfare, Crack of Doom. They are good reads. -- Al

They did a sequel where Richard Burton played the part of Steiner and it was just God awful............

"DEMARCATION!"................"We're German soldiers!!".........."We are attacking.....We are retreating.........We are counterattacking!!".........

Yeah, that one wasn't one of Burton's prouder moments. Burton as a Desert rat, yes, as a Wehrmacht NCO, a big no. -- Al

A terrible ending to a generally fine movie. Too bad. -- Al

Thanks guys, that's the one. Don't forget Hell is for Heroes. I love small squad level movies. Also I have to plug the "The Outpost" by Jake Tapper. I just finished it, excellent book.

" .. small squad ..." well.. what about " The Big Red One" with Lee Marvin

I have always really liked Hell is for Heroes. Some outstandingly drawn characters make this movie. Besides the obvious excellence of McQueen, the supporting cast is unbeatable. Parker, Kellen, Darin, Coburn, Newhart, Adams, and especially Guardino just draw their characters so well that the viewer feels as if he knows them. The TV show Combat followed closely on the heels of this movie and has the same feel as this movie as Robert Pirosh (film writer) was heavily involved in both, as was Leonard Rosenman (who scored both). -- Al

Always liked "The Wind And The Lion" w/ S. Connery,C.Bergen,B.Keith-(check out the hutzpah of the fledgling U.S.M.C. circa 1903) and I always liked "Kelly's Heroes" w/C.Eastwood ,D.Rickles,D.Sutherland ,et.al..Best Viet Nam movie to date by far .."Hamburger Hill",nothing ..say again, nothing comes close. This comes from an eye witness & survivor 3/68-4/69-3 Mar .Div..

Movie night at my house when you obtain? Also...did you happen to notice the "Go for Broke" exhibit @ Veteran's Memorial?

Markey, it will be a while before I get that movie, but I have "Downfall", which was recommended on this Forum. I'll let you know. I found the 442 exhibit a bit disappointing, as there were no local photos. I was able to see their Archive room, but even there, there was not much.

Agree about all the mentioned. "Hamburger Hill" is an underated movie. Seems to get lost behind "Platoon" and "Full Metal Jacket", but it is better than both. A very intense movie. -- Al

That is disappointing news about the exhibit. When I spotted the sign over on lower main, my first thought was you. I guess I'll pass then. Keep in touch on the movie though, I would be very interested!
