A friend of mine has acquired a range finder that was said to be used on Jagdtigers and possibly other tanks. Has anyone run across this type of thing?? See attached photo.\. Any pics of it mounted on a tank?

Hi Bill,

It is a range finder but I would need to see a photo of the data plate to try and get anywhere with it. If you can provide some more photos of this piece I believe I can help you ID it. My frist guess is it is a Stereo Vision scope that gives you the range once the two figures line up in the field of view. These may have been used by AT weapons and for shooting at aircraft but this is a guess with out the data plate information and being able to verify what the sight picture looks like. Feel free to PM email the photos just let me know if you decide to email them so I know your email address and can keep an eye open for it

Thanks Dave,
I'll send you a PM with my email and will send you off the info when it is received.. I know my friend has many more pics. At the moment these are the only other 2 I have

Hi Again,

I feel pretty positive that the version of range finder (stereo scope) you have here was used by forward observers for the Field Artillery. The tripod it is on is designed to be jabbed into the ground for added stability and has an azmith ring around the base which would be lined up to give a direction in degrees back to the battery. It is similar to the ones I have seen mounted on mechanized artillery vehicles and Stugs/Jagpanzers. I found a reference to one from WWI that was nearly identical with a different letter number designator I will find the web page again and post it for you to see.

More soon

Dave

I think this is the kind of info my friend is interested in. He had heard it was used on the jagtiger. do you have any picture references on use on these spgs? Sill waiting ot get more pics from him. Thanks

Hi Again,

I have found some photos of Stugs with a similar set of optics peaking out of the hatch on the right side as you face the vehicle from the front. They are a close match but not exact. I will go through my reference books tonight and see if I have any clear photos of the Jagdtiger or some of the SP Artillery. If I find anything I will scan it and post it here.

Hi Bill

I received your email and will let you know what I think this item is and if it is from WWII.

All the best

Dave

Hi Bill,

Here is what I have found out so far. This item was made by Carl Zeiss Militarabteilung Jena Germany. The markings blc indicate this maker. The blue coloured + sign indicates could weather capability.

Now I looked at the photos your friend sent you and they are not of the same piece of equipment, the serial numbers in the photo here and on the ones in the email are not the same, also some other differences so I guess he sent you photos he found on line until he gets home to where the actual piece of equipment resides.

Now going by what I have found so far this scope was used by the Airforce as well as the Army so there may well be a data bank somewhere on line you can find out exactly which unit this particular set was issued too, the German Army kept very detailed records so you might be able to find out more through the Bundes Archives or you could contact Zeiss and see if they have their war time records available.

It was also used with the JadgTiger and JadgPanther. I will see if any of my photos clearly show this piece of equipment. This may take a while but for the most part the piece of equipment here looks proper and correct for WWII issue. Hope this is helpful

Dave
