Nelson's personal protection weapon up for sale (1 Viewer)

Hi Rob,

As a firearms collector I would say the auction estimate is low. I saw some more recent offerings that came away in the 6 figure range and they werent nearly as old os this one. I would think that there will be some heavy hitters at the sale and likely there will be some serious bidding over the phone and web as well. Thanks for sharing the link I know I will be watch to see the result of this one.

Hi Dave,

I must confess I know nothing of the values of these sort of weapons, but just the fact that it belong to the legend that is Nelson you'd have thought it would be worth more than that, and as you say I would not be surprised if the article is way off here. Nasty looking piece isn't it, apparently in his younger days Nelson liked to get stuck in to the hand to hand action and was often in the thick of it.

Some oddities in this story. Mortimer made the weapon in 1805, the year of Trafalgar, so Nelson wouldn't have owned it for long. We also know that Nelson paced up and down and was certainly not "brandishing" any weapon. It is quite possible that Nelson could have owned the weapon, but as it was brand new in 1805 I suspect that the so called "battle damage" was inflicted at some later date. Trooper

I did wonder about the word ' brandishing', probably they mean wearing it perhaps?

I would hardly think brandishing and wearing are similees. Maybe the lower value suggested is correct. The provenance my not be so solid.
