This morning at Ver-Sur-Mer ( near Arromanches) a new British memorial ( and I think the 1st along the Normandy coast)was inaugurated to commemorate the 22.000 British soldiers who died in the battle for Normandy.
Ver- sur -Mer is situated on Gold beach were in the early morning of June 6th 1944 the 50th British infantry division landed. By the evening of the 6th they were 6 miles inland and made junction with the Canadians from Juno.

Thanks for the picture, I heard there were going to be a few new memorials, I like being at the beaches early morning or late evening, there is a quiet calm atmosphere which was a complete contrast to whet that infamous day must have been like. The cemeteries bring it back, from the largest above Omaha beach through to the Jerusalem cemetery, with only 47 graves, including Jack Banks who was only 16 and the youngest to die in Normandy, he was with the Durham Light Infantry.

I see all the flowers at the cemeteries and smile inwardly as I think they would probably, in life, have preferred you to leave a beer, tea or coffee.

I will be over there for a few days in July and will put a thread to ask if anyone want a picture of a particular place, site or even grave, as I know many people are too far away to visit through finances or distance, I am quite luck as only 8 hours door to door away from my home in England, so can visit every year.
