I just picked up a new display cabinet and thanks to Capitol Ron for suggesting a long time ago. It's called a Detolf and it's available from Ikea here.

For one who hates to put things together because the instructions are very hard to follow, this one is very easy and takes little time to do. You can't beat the price, $59. The only drawbacks are that it's not completely airtight so some dust will probably get it and the shelves are not adjustable. Other than that, a great pickup and recommended.

You really have to love Ikea!:D Lots of fun interesting things at a very moderate price!

We have a nice one in Atlanta, and the wife loves a trip down there to do a little shopping. This time we are going to combine it with a trip to the
Merchandize Mart and really give the old feet a workout!

I'll bring the SSR........like there is really a lot of room for goodies!

Brad... love the price...can you share the dimensions please.

Other Brad here, here are the dimensions, from the catalog page at Ikea's website:

Width: 16 3/4 "
Depth: 14 3/8 "
Height: 64 1/8 "
Max load/shelf: 13 lb

Yes, very nice! Ikea has some good things for good prices.

Looking at the pics, I wonder if it might not be possible to get more of the clips or brackets that support the shelves, and add shelving.

Prost!
Brad

I have one in my dining room. The price is great and as you say the only drawback really is the shelves are not adjustable (guess it keeps the price down.) Although you could use and idea like Simmo's figure stands to get more display area per shelf if you are not creating dios.

Yes, you can get in plain wood or dark wood. Unfortunately, you cannot add shelves because the spine around which the glass goes only permits 4 shelves.

There is one that is a very short distance from the OTSN, you can see it from the parking lot.

Did ya'll read this...

lighting is extra...sounds fragile...

"We recommend you secure this furniture to the wall with the enclosed safety strap to prevent it from tipping over.
Different wall materials require different types of fasteners. Use fasteners suitable for the walls in your home (not included).
Handle with care! A strike, knock or scratch can cause the glass to crack suddenly. However, only into small pieces, never into sharp fragments.
Two people are needed to assembly this furniture.
Lighting sold separately."

the soldiers are so expensive.

Hey Mike,

We don't have ours strapped to the wall (thyey have to say that to protect themselves) They are also pretty durable, we just moved our accross the city fully assembled and was A OK. Also for some reason our dog keeps banging his head on it and also so far fine

I didn't get the lighting because I wanted to use the top for putting some things on, which I will now use for a quonset hut, RAF and a plane.

I think the above from Ikea is just to cover their you know what. It's seems sturdy to me and the idea of glass breaking is always possible but seems remote.

Scott...Brad...

I'm sure they are as sturdy and relaible as anything else on the market...I wouldn't hesitate to buy it over that disclaimer...the only thing I don't like is that it says it take two people to assemble...was that true?

Mike,

I did it myself. I propped up the back shelf against a table so it wouldn't fall down and then built the other sides around it. You should be ok.

Regards,

Brad...

I'm sure I could figure it out...

looking at the link...

I can't find any info on the light accessory...the price...

I know the shelf is out of stock right now...

I don't think this thing is "flimsy" at all...the shipping weight is 89 pounds...

it also comes in to colors...

but I need to buy something and put these red boxes away...

I did mine myself also. I also bought the lighting kit, I advise against that though. Not the easiest thing to attach. Mine is still in the box. Also it is halogen which I have read creates too much heat and is not good for our collectibles.

I have been looking at glass cabinets like the Detolf which is a great purchase for $59.00.

Most have slits at the door margins and edges which allow moisture, dust etc to get in.

Does anyone know why these glass cabinets are designed like so ?

Raymond.:)

I would think that it all has to do with price. Also it is from IKEA so it is not the finest craftsmanship out there and I am certain they won't be appearing on the antiques roadshow :D
