Hello all, hope you had a great Christmas and from all of of us at Sierra Toy Soldier wish you a very happy and safe New Year. It's 2008, boy didn't 2007 go fast.

Any how we have some great news on John's latest releases the War of 1812, or as it is known in the UK the American War of 1812. Hope you enjoy.

THE WAR OF 1812
THE BATTLE OF CHIPPEWA
JULY 5th 1814

“REGULARS, BY GOD!”

On July 5th 1814, , British and US troops met on the plain at Chippewa, Canada. The Battle was to last nearly 3 hours. The battle was to show the whole world that the army of the young country of America had become a professional military arm, capable of holding its own against the world’s best armies.

Brigadier General Winfield Scott, commanded the First Brigade of the Left Division of the US Army. He had tried to obtain the correct blue uniform for his men during the spring of 1814, but failed and was forced to accept the grey jackets usually worn as fatigues or undergarments, instead of the regulation short tailed blue coatee.
His men would make this humble garment famous, and today the grey uniforms of the West Point Cadets are worn to perpetuate the memory of the Left Division during the 1814 Niagara campaign.

The British were already deployed on the plain. The British commander General Sir Phineas Riall, upon seeing the grey-clad Americans, believed he faced nothing more than “Buffalo militia”. The British artillery were ordered to open up on the American lines and despite the heavy fire from the British guns, Brig. Gen. Winfield Scott’s brigade stood firm. Riall soon realized he had made a mistake in identifying the American force as militia, and declared to his staff
“Those are regulars, by God!”

The British went on to suffer heavy casualties and were forced to retire.

Riall’s army of 1,500 redcoats suffered 148 killed, and a further 360 wounded or captured.
Scott was to lose 61 killed and 270 wounded of his 1,300 men.

The Battle of Chippewa was an important event in the history of the US army. After two disappointing and demoralizing years of combat in the War of 1812, American regulars finally won a convincing victory over the British army, whose troops were among the best in the world.

The American Left Division were to continue their advance along the Niagara peninsula, leading to the next major engagement at Lundy’s Lane on 25thJuly 1814.

All right, who has worked out what the 12 sets for the Grey Jacket Collection are going to be. From the photo I come up with the following.

1. Regimental Flagbearer
2. US Flagbearer
3. Officer & Drummer (2)
4. Kneeling Wounded (3)
5. Standing Wounded (?) Checkout the dark photo just behind flagbearer
6 & 7. Firing Kneeling & Standing (4) (2 sets ??) (John does not do 4 figure sets)
8. Kneeling Loading (2)
9. Standing Loading (2)
10. Firing (no hats) (2)
11. Marching (?) Assuming 3 figures as per other sets. Checkout the dark photo right hand side
12. Mounted Officer ????????? Has to be one but not in photo's.

No Brits? I gather there will be other 1812 sets but none beyond these for Chippewa. On #12 maybe Scott? We need at least one personality figure.

I am giving serious thought to making this my first non-glossy project. I love the subject material and find War of 1812 stuff to be quite scarce. I also have enjoyed looking at previous JJ releases and would be very content to finally collect some of his figures. I have not paid close enough attention to rate of release of his sets in the past. Does he usually release a bunch at a time or is it usually 1-2 per month?

The BoSS initial release was I recall 4 sets, then 3 and 1.

So I’m not surprised to see 7 sets released in February.

I have a question for you regarding this line....will it portray Natives in this line, I suspect it might as do his other lines?

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the updated information!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

I was at the Toy Soldier Shoppe in Milwaukee stocking up on some JJD items yesterday (FM05, BM09 and WIM05 :)) and happened to see photos of what looks like an 8th set in the US 1812 range...3 figures wounded in unpainted sculpt form. The work just seems to get better and better, and we haven't even seen the Brits yet. I also heard there may be a chance to see some of the new Zulu items from WB on display at the Michigan show this coming weekend if anybody is in the neighborhood.
