Glad to see he's posting, hopefully some goodies for us in the future.

He seems to be moving to fantasy which is very popular. Can't blame him for expanding his product line.

I guess I'm ol school, the fantasy, monsters, never interested me at all, but we're all different.

The younger crowd like them. Not much military interest in younger people.

Sci Fi/Fantasy wargaming is hugely popular with kids/young adults.

There is convention in Indianapolis called Gen Con, geared to that crowd, it draws 10,000 attendees.

As kids/young adults age, some "graduate" to historical gaming, others stay with sci fi/fantasy.

As I told another member today, Gen Con draws more attendees than every toy soldier show around the world.

Combined.

Probably fivefold; wargaming is a huge hobby, big in the US, bigger in the UK and Europe.

The UK is the birthplace of the toy soldier hobby with W. Britain being the longest standing company in the world, it was also the king of plastics with Airfix, Britain and Timpo, the US had one of the premier companies as well, Marx Toys.

Very well said; those are all spot-on observations.

I have found that games (computer, including hard-strategy/tactics games & others, and even board) trend toward Fantasy/Sci-Fi (what ever happened to a good old Axis & Allies game - or, even more classic, Risk?!).

I admit to playing those games when was younger with my friends as much as any wargame. My friends' kids seem to like fantasy even more. Whole worlds to create, and all. Of course, that is true of real History.

But I see Fantasy & Historical figures living side-by-side. Example:
You have the Riders of Rohan. You have Elvish Cavalry. You have armored Miniature Schnauzers riding Pegasi with magical bolts... Wouldn't you want the real Historical soldiers that inspired those Fantasies?
I agree with George - and and hope the percentage is as good as half saying Yes to TS/MF after they get their fill of Goblins.
Also, accuracy is not so much required in Fantasy. Coolness & art, yes - but not accuracy. Some people like things to be accurate.

Just my thoughts. Please add yours.

I noticed “Kickstarter” in the URL?

Does anyone know if this line/series is crowd funded?

Beyond that, if it is crowd funded, has anyone seen FL raise money for products like this before?

Wargamming is big in the UK, with all ages, all of the plastic model shows have a wargamming element, at a recent show there was 18 tables 12ft X 12ft with wargammers on, across tthe military history spectrum as well, saw some WW2, Napoleonics and ancients wargame tables. In 15mm and also 1/72. The London show from March 2023 onwards will be a mixed show, with plastics and wargammers as well, think it is the only way the show can survive.
On Fl, they probably need some new markets, they make outstanding Toy soldiers but the price always put me off, their WW2 winter Germans are the best there is, but in the UK 1 figure is double the price i pay for JJD and nearly double as K & C. I was at a London show a few years ago and it was a choice, which i deliberated on, 5 WW2 Winter FL Germans or 11 JJD, i went with the JJD.

I sincerely hope FL get back on with more releases, but who knows, times are tough.

On plastic kits, i buy the odd one and put it away for when i have time to make it, but they have gone up in price, I saw a new Lancaster think it was 1/32 and it was £600 sterling.

This could be the future for First legion historical figures

Thing about it. You pick a regiment and conflict. Crowd fund it and get the $ up front. Then produce it or pass on it if not funded. Example start with 3 figures and make the stretch goals more figures.

Better then taking a risk on a dud.

Indeed. Not sure that bodes well for this hobby.

Good for Corporate.

But some art is better done without focusing strictly on consensus or capitalism. I like more home-spun stuff myself.

Their Fantasy range is cool and artistically done, but I fear the "crowd" will not fund the best future.

Been reading the threads on this and kickstarter, does not bode well for the finances of the company, you could think it was for this new market venture, but with the lack of releases in the last few months and the ever ongoing sale one has to feel the company might be a bit cash strapped and to design, manufacture and release new 'traditional' figures and vehicles would cost and does the company have those funds to do so!

I would kick start fir a series of figures or range i liked. But how much money would FL collect. Toy soldier collectors are a vast minority and then w3 all have our own particular areas of interest.

The lack of new releases has nothing, repeat nothing to do with finances, more to do with factory/production/supply chain/COVID issues.

There are loads of new releases in the pipeline, but again, due to factory/production/supply chain/COVID issues, they are delayed.

Their goods go by sea to the West Coast, then from there to their warehouse, there are supply chain issues now and they've been ongoing for some time.

Anyone who has questions about a particular manufacturer is best served consulting with their toy soldier dealer of choice as we actually speak to the manufacturers either via phone or email and they inform us of issues and what they are up against in today's climate.

Well, that is good news.

I look forward to their Ww2 products with great interest!

George, do we know why First Legion stopped providing updates on the forum? The updates were very useful...
