THE RAID ON ST. FRANCIS
More figures for the Ranger camp!
Supplies were usually placed in bags , which in turn were rolled up in a blanket, tumpline pack, or carried in a knapsack. Supplies for a raid would include ‘beef, pork, rum, sugar, rice and peas’. Kegs of gunpowder were also included for such a large raid. During the initial stages of the St. Francis raid, the infamous “Gunpowder Mystery” was to reduce the raiding force by twenty-five percent. An “explosion” was to lead to 2 officers and 38 men sent back before the raid had hardly begun.
There was usually little time to prepare for a raid, Rangers were expected to be ready and in their boats in less than an hour.
In Roger’s rules of ranging, it was instructed that every evening all Rangers were to appear at roll-call, each equiped , with a musket, sixty rounds of powder and ball, and a hatchet. At a sudden crisis, the order would be shouted, “Turn out, Rangers!” and the men would rush to their parades with arms in hand.

THE JACOBITE REBELLION 1745
The British army at Culloden was deployed in 2 main lines of 6 battalions each , with a third reserve line of 3 battalions.
Standing on the extreme left of the first British line ,was the 4th Regiment of Foot (Barrell’s). The Highlanders on the right and centre pressed forward running across the front of the British line directly towards the 4th Regiment of Foot. Such an onslaught previously had sent the redcoats running to the rear in flight. Witnesses to the battle state that initially Barrell’s regiment stood their ground, but almost at once the rebels started to lap around the flanks, which caused the British regiment to fall back towards the second line battalions.
Out of 325 men, it was recorder that 17 were Killed and 108 wounded. Despite these heavy losses suffered by the British 4th Regiment, it was nothing in comparison with the terrible casualties which were inflicted upon the charging Highland clansmen.
Loading, defending and combat sets will be added to this range over the next few months.
