Good morning and welcome to the first releases of 2011. Written on a cold and frosty morning from Northern California, where the ground today decided to move around a bit. We have had a series of small earthquakes locally, but this morning we had a bigger 4.5. Hopefully that is the end of them.

Here we always we try to bring you great new releases, and we have some good ones, but this time brought with a little bit of bad news, in that there will be a price increase commencing in May, so if there are some sets that you have been thinking of now might be a great time to buy them.

Hope you like the new pieces, hope as always to have them on the web site later today. www.sierratoysoldier.com

Best regards

The Nieuport 17 entered service in 1916 and became a mainstay of Allied squadrons during the first world war. It was manufactured by Nieuport -- a French aircraft manufacturer.
The type was designed by one of Frances’s greatest aviation pioneers, Edouard de Nieuport.

Although the Nieuport 17 was maneuverable and fast, its structure was fragile . A little out of the ordinary was the lower wing, which was much smaller than the top wing and as such the plane became known as the Sesquiplane wing set-up (one and a half wings)

The Nieuport 17 could be equipped with the synchronization gear that would allow a front-mounted Vickers machine gun to fire between the spinning propeller blades without shooting them off. However, the British preferred the Lewis gun, which had to be mounted on the upper wing, to fire overtop of the propeller.
Mounted directly in front of the pilot’s vision is an Aldis sight for the upper wing Lewis gun.

In 1917, Canadian fighter ace Billy Bishop flew his Nieuport 17 in combat against German pilots, including an engagement with Manfred von Richthofen -- the infamous "Red Baron".
After he shot down his fifth plane, the ground crew produced a can of blue paint and gave his plane the distinctive blue nose, despite the regulation against customized paint schemes.
Bishop shot down 72 enemy aircraft and earned the Victoria Cross, Distinguished Service Order and Bar, Military Cross, and Distinguished Flying Cross.

BATTLE Of FORT CARILLON, TICONDEROGA, 8th JULY 1758

The Grenadiers were the elite shock troops of the regiment. Their special headdress was to differentiate them from the regular “bonnet” companies. The high grenadier bearskin cap made them look taller and more imposing.
The grenadier name derived from the function they had used to perform in the seventeenth century, which was throwing hand grenades prior to a final assault on a defensive position. Army commanders would customarily organize the regimental grenadier companies into a special assault battalion which were then used to spearhead attacks on critical vital points.
At Ticonderoga the grenadier companies from the 42nd, were converged with 5 other Grenadier companies into one unit, and were under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel Frederick Haldiman of the 60th Foot.

RETURN TO MONONGAHELA
THE BATTLE ON THE MONONGAHELA 1755

The advance guard of Braddocks expedition consisted of 100 grenadiers of the 44th, under Lieut. Colonel the Hon. Thomas Gage. It was followed by a party of axemen, two field guns, with ammunition wagons and their guard. The advance guard had just crossed a wooded ravine eight miles from the fort, when the scouts suddenly fell back. They had sighted a figure hurrying along the path, dressed as an Indian, but with an officer's gorget. It turned out to be the French commander, Beaujeu, who had just disposed his tiny force of 900 in semi-circular formation, with the French in the centre, hidden from view by the trees and inequalities of the ground. It comprised Regulars, Canadians and Indians, of whom the last- numbered 650. Their opening fire caused severe loss to Gage's men, who, however, wheeled into line and commenced volley firing, which killed the French commander.
The company of grenadiers were quickly overwhelmed by the more accurate fire of the enemy.
Although the French were temporarily checked by three rounds of grape and canister from the guns and by the spirited advance of the British main body, shouting "God save the King," there was considerable confusion caused by crowding from behind, and several men in the front were afterwards found to have been killed by fire from their comrades in the rear.
By this time all the grenadiers had fallen save eleven and the survivors utilized a prone tree as a breastwork, from which they maintained an effective fire.

The Nieuport 17 is a must have as are the German ground crew. Will also try to get some money together for the Jacobite. A great set of releases, as usual. The Bishop Nieuport is a real corker. Looks very accurate to me and I am something of a rivet counter concerning WW1 aircraft. Looking forward with great anticipation as the WW1 air war series expannds. -- Al

Happy, I will soon be marching in kilts with Howitzers!!!! However, I will hope for a second marching grenadier set to add much needed variety to the column.

Earlier series could market a marching release of 3 figures for under $100, but those days are gone. So I guess, I will have to accept 2 figure releases.

Note for BoM, Braddocks column included Howitzers, so feel free to adding those to the BoM displays.

The artillery losses at actual battle included 4 12-pounders (brass), 2 6-pounders (brass), 4 8-inch Howitzers (brass) and 3 Coehorn Mortars.

An additional 8 Coehorn Mortats were destroyed at Dunbar's Camp at the order of Braddock.

True, but JJD does mention that they have been delayed and are due in April (perhaps a coincidence as the Baron was KIA in April, 1918). Moritz had to find a new master. -- Al

The new Sudan release GDH-06 is very close to GHD-04. The only difference appears to be in a slightly different placement of the head and legs/feet of the kneeling figure. I was hoping for the additional Naval Brigade figures.

Wow JJ has some great stuff coming out this year and those are only the February releases. That NIEUPORT looks awesome. I wonder what else is in the production hopper over there.

Keep it silly

The difference also lies in the grip on the rifle and the location of the rifle straps in relation to the hands. JJD has used this variance on other standing and kneeling figures in POA and BOM series. -- Al

Not even the old hats on, hats off variation to get a two for one. The prize of this bunch is that Nieuport. Stunning.

Do we somehow know that the are getting Moritz with the Baron? I posted the Andrea version a while back that includes the dog, but that has nothing to do with John.

The chin straps on the standing figures are different and there is a slight variation of posture on the kneeling figures.

I'll be getting these, but where are the Fuzzy Wuzzies?

A small month for me...4 sets only...the US Howitzer...the 2 Gordons firing...the lone and last for a while Highlander...for a while...and the Grenadiers for Ticonderoga...

Randy...yes...the new GDH-06 is very similar to the previous released GDH-04...JJ has done this before as Al mentioned on B of M and POA...slight variances on firing lines...but to build a square...you will need "firing figures"...and honestly...there are not too many ways to pose a figure standing firing...as Doug said..."hats on...hats off"...this is a good release...I will buy multiples of this...after the 2-3 more sets of Gordons...I think after Chinese New Year we might see some FW's and Mahdists...I hope...I got a lot of Gordons looking for a fight...

The description on the howitzer says that it took 2-3 trained gunners and 3-4 assistants to operate this piece...I sure hope we get a couple of more (2-3 figure) releases of artillery crew...I hate to duplicate "one off" figures to man a gun...that thing looks short...stocky and powerful...

if B of M is now relegated to JJCLUB set figures...I guess it's finally finished...what a run...hahaha...

I hope John will get back to Highlanders soon...or at least Lowlanders quickly in their less ornate clothing...

I'm kind of surprised that JJ led off with a non dramatic pose on the Ticonderoga Grenadiers...I kind of thought the first release of them would be an action set...

the price increaseI guess it was kind of expected...as the industry seems to follow suit...I don't like it...but I guess it was expected as K&C jumped...

I am pleasantly surprised about the BM-27 set! I didn't think we would get any more grenadiers and there can never be enough casualties for Monongahela ;)

The Jacobite looks great as well, and I'm looking forward to hopefully seeing some lowlanders soon, plus we still need a drummer and NCO's for Barrel's Regiment!

Not to keen on the price increase though:(

Niels

I'm definitely getting BM27. Although I was sad to read that the 44th grenadiers will be the last set of the return to the monongahela, I was hoping John would do another 12-14 figures as grenadiers the same way he did with the regular foot figures in the return to monongahela series. There is a huge difference between the earlier foot figures and the RTTM figures, very dynamic poses, this could be done for all new grenadiers too!
The howitzer, you guys think it could replace the six-pounder that came with the limber and cannon set from the monongahela? Would it accurately fit?

Good releases........
French and log walls for Ticonderoga coming.....
Lowlanders and mounted dragoons for Culloden.....
definitely some Madhists for the Sudan......
I think we may see a surprise or two this year as well (Arab Dhow or gunboat).
Definitely more cavalry and artillery.
Price increase was not a surprise but while budget stays the same quantity may suffer.

I too would very much like to see a drummer and NCOs as well as another officer for Barrel's Regiment. We're in need of file closers to stand behind the firing line.

I really don't want to buy another plane right now, but the Sopwith Camel was so nice that is going to be hard to resist this stunning silver Nieuport. Great job!!

Too bad about price increase ....but will still stay with British WW1 aircraft ....love that Nieuport and definitely will continue Ticoderoga .........more hours at Home Depot..........:D:D:D:D
