Good morning for a cold, wet and stormy Northern California, where we are getting hit with storms coming in from Hawaii, good news they are not the cold ones Canada usually sends us, but the very wet ones Hawaii likes to send.
First very happy Christmas and a terrific New year to everyone. We have some terrific new releases to brighten your dull January days.
As always we hope you enjoy them as much as we do. Should have these on the Website later on today.

The name Ranger Charles Jenkins is taken from Crozier’s “Virginia Colonial Militia” pp.9-57.
The article includes a list of the companies of Rangers employed on the upper tributaries of the Potomac, and in the Greenbrier River, West Virginia frontier, during the French and Indian War.
Ranger Charles Jenkins is listed in the service of Captain Samuel Overton’s Company of Rangers, which saw service in 1755 to 1756.
A description of a typical Ranger who was a deserter from Captain Hezekiah Dunn’s Company of Rangers from New Jersey was mentioned as wearing “… provincial clothing viz., a grey lapell’d waistcoat and an under green jacket, a leather cap, and buckskin breeches….”

An aide-de-camp (French for camp assistant) is a personal assistant, secretary, or adjutant to a person of high rank, usually a senior military officer or a head of state. The first aide-de-camp is typically the foremost personal aide, and was expected to take on any odd job his general might want done. He was an extension of the general’s eyes, ears and voice. He carried orders to subordinate units and observed their execution.
The Aide to Brigadier General Winfield Scott, the commanding officer of the First Brigade, Left Division of the US Army on 5th July 1814, was First Lt. William Jenkins- Worth.
During the War of 1812 ADC’s were normally selected from among the regimental officers, and only lieutenants were supposed to be detailed for this duty.

BATTLE Of FORT CARILLON, TICONDEROGA, 8th JULY 1758
The 42nd was the most numerous regiment in Abercromby’s army numbering approximately 1,100 all ranks. Their attack on the French right was defended by three French regiments, La Reine, Bearne, and Guyenne. The highlanders suffered great losses, Lt. William Grant was to write “ Even those that were mortally wounded, cried aloud to their companions, not to mind or lose a thought for them, but to follow their officers, and charge the enemy, and to mind the honour of their King and country.”

THE JACOBITE REBELLION 1745
There is documentary evidence that Jacobite soldiers were eventually armed with firelocks as their primary weapon, and usually with bayonets as well. The orderly books are full of routine injunctions to officers and NCO’s requiring them to ensure that their men’s arms were “well fixed” and in good order, and it makes it clear that the firelocks were regarded more important than their swords. The ordinary Jacobite soldier was known to see the broadsword and targe as an encumbrance rather than an asset, as a later generation of Black Watch soldiers “declined using broadswords”, preferring to rely on bayonets instead.

Germany sent 4 Befehlswagen 1 Command tanks to Spain. They were first issued 1 per company, and 1 in the battalion headquarters.
These were a version of the PZKPFW 1 AUSF B, but with a fixed superstructure and additional radio equipment. The provision of dedicated radio vehicles was due to the Wehrmacht’s prescient view that radio communications were essential in co-ordinating modern mobile operations. The German Command considered that the leader of a tank subdivision himself should not necessarily participate in the battle; his task lied in the battle control. Therefore, commander’s tanks of the first series had no armament at all. The tanks crew consisted of three people: a tank commander (who was also the leader of the tank division), tank driver and radio-telegrapher. Later it was determined that the tank should have arms and it was equipped with one MG - 13 machine gun of 7,92 mm caliber. Radio equipment included a transceiver FuG 6 with 13 - 16 km reach and receiving radio station FuG 2.
The prominent St. Andrews Cross painted on the roof was an air identity mark, common on Nationalist tanks to prevent straffing by friendly aircraft.

THE BATTLE OF CHIPPEWA July 5th 1814
During this period one of the main changes was in loading and firing techniques. The French drill replaced the English routine. Most notably shifting the cannoneer who held the portfire and actually touched off the piece from the left to the right side of the breech.
This meant that he had to stand with his back to the muzzle in order to keep his right hand with the portfire towards the gun.
