new Russian Armata tank (1 Viewer)

Pretty interesting. It appears the 3 man crew all work from an armored section in the hull, with no one in what must be a fully automated turret. -- Al

It will be interesting to see how it does on the battlefield. The lack of crew in the turret is an unusual move and I think a serious flaw when it comes to threat detection up close especially with dug in infantry or long range missile's from attack helos and ground support jets.

I find myself wondering if the crew has easy (read speedy) access to the turret and its equipment when the inevitable malfunction occurs. No 'johnny on the spot' to clear a jam could be embarrassing. -- Al

The Armata is not the first main battle tank with an autoloader. Most current MBTs (Challenger, Leopard, Abrams, Merkava) have a 4 man crew (Commander, Driver, Gunner and Loader). However, several modern MBT such as the Leclerc (France), Type 99 (China); T-72 and T-90 (Russia) and Al-Khalid (Pakistan) have an autoloader and a 3 man crew as does the Armata. The 3 man tanks are not new - they have been around for several years with at least the Russian T-90 having been in combat (Chechnya, Georgia, and Ukraine vs the 3 man T-84). I'm sure the crew can access the turret of the Armata.
