i am new to miniature soldiers. i travel quite a bit, and i always look for a soldier representative of the place i visit. i have a beautiful napoleon made by aeroart, i purchased in france. a general washington and cornwallis from virginia (king and country). alamo scene (king and country) from san antonio. i also have my first, a Wbritain robert e. lee from my first new orleans trip many years ago.
MY QUESTION IS: how do i decide which company(ies) to focus on? i would love to do a revoltionary war diorama, but it seems that cost wise, king and country is the way to go? what other companies make quality products? any other advice for buying? THANKS!

Surf the web and find the lines you like. Toy Soldiers are a personal thing and what rings my bell may bore you

ljr25,
Welcome to the forum! Travelling is an ideal way to pick up figures and then to be able to remember your journeys. I'm personally into the ARW, but Britains has some incredible stuff coming out . Take a look at them. Some other clubbers can chip in with better suggestions than I. Later. Mike

I was trying to think of a way to answer your question but I think 4th Hussar gave a good answer: it all depends on what you're interested in. If your taste varies as to time periods and it sounds like it does, you may want to sample various companies or go to a toy soldier show to see them in person. Speaking of shows, since you live in Chicago you probably want to go to the Chicago Toy Soldier Show in late September at the Hyatt in Schaumberg, probably the most important show of the year.

For Rev War, I would recommend K & C
WW II: K & C although companies like Figarti and Honour Bound make wonderful products, not just as much as K & C
WWI: W. Britains and K & C
French and Indian War: John Jenkins
Napoleonics: K & C, W. Britains, Little Legion and Frontline
Civil War: W. Britains, Old Northwest, Conte and K & C
Zulu War: W. Britains and Little Legion
Alamo: K & C and W. Britains

I would also suggest taking a look at the Treefrog Store, under time period. It gives you a variety of manufacturers for the different time periods.

Welcome to the Forum and hope that helps a little.

thanks for the info jazzeum, others! it seems like K&C might be a good fit for me. my interest lies primarily in 18th and 19th centuries.
are W. britains considered higher quality than K&C? there seems to be a premium in price.

Before committing I would also suggest you also consider the following:
WW II: Conte
Napoleonics: First Legion
Zulu War: Conte
Roman: East of India
Greek/Persian: Conte, East of India (not size compatible)
Best of luck at it.

I would suggest a bit of surfing around, and if possible checking figures live at a shop or toy soldier show, always different to see them «in the flesh»:p.
For surfing, check the manufacturer's section under Treefrog's Resources or this link: http://wmhocker.com/index.php?s=resource. Enjoy!

Welcome to the hobby and the forum!

For the War for Independence, I would also recommend Frontline's Colonial Classics, for excellent civilian subjects, and scenery pieces.

Prost!
Brad

Welcome! As to your question. Who can decide? Get them all. It only prelongs the inevitable! As Seven of Nine states" Resistance is futile".:)
