Hey Guys,

I'm not a Frontline collector and I can't really tell you if showed anything else at the show that was new. Sorry about that but these new German Calvary guys were too good to pass up. Yup, I bough a few sets.

What do you guys think, yeah okay besides the fact the horses don't have face masks too.

Gas mask were made for the horses in WWI. Is Frontline aware of this.
No soldier German, British or American would be wearing one if they didnt have to.

Hi Guys,

Have to second that motion by Chuck! If you didnt need it you didnt wear it and I m sure they would have put on their horses masks if they were needed especially since trained horses were getting scarce by this point in the war. Now if they correct the set and put masks on the horses I would be among the first to buy them. They look good but should be corrected.

Dave you're a veteran right? Looking at these figures reminded me of MOP Level 3 exercises in Ft. Irwin CA. Yuck. I would never want any figure wearing a gas mask.

Just a useless trivia point on the subject of gas masks.

The scientists at Porton Down (don't know what the US equivilant is, but in the UK, it's where all those clever people in white coats with letters after their names mess around with chemicals and biological material which the rest of us rather didn't exist) reckon that the gas masks issued in WWI only reduced the hazard (Mustard gas etc) by half. Meaning that the air being breathed in inside the mask was only 2 parts cleaner than the contaminated air outside.

Not much comfort really. :(

Whereas the best of todays respirators, when fitted with the appropriate canister and fitted properly will give a purity inside in excess of 100,000 purer than outside the respirator.

Which is a bit more like it. :)

Hi Jrsteel,

Yes I am a veteran and boy do I remember loosing a lot of weight running around FT Irwin in the summer in MOPP 3 & 4 loads of fun wasnt it. When were you there and with which unit? I was out there in the late 80s as a part of 2d Armored Division. It was a lot of fun until they popped CS.

As for the information on the WWI masks I am sure they were not what we could consider cutting edge technology but having sat through more than my share of Chemical Agent classes and what they will do to you if you inhale them I will tell you that something blocking off 50% of the vapors is better than a hot stick in the eye! They used some really nasty stuff back then...

Still it would be interesting to add some of those figures to the collection because they would be really different.

Dave

I'm no expert and this is going to sound really stupid (done it before and will do it again) but these releases look rather neat, especially the dismounted officer looking at the map.

Yes, it reminds me that James Whale, who directed some of the early b&w horror films like Frankenstein, used imagery from WWI in his films. That guy looks like Claude Rains in the Invisible Man.

LOL, that's a good one.

Dave I was in Ft. Irwin around the same time, mid to late 80's with the 4th Infantry Div. Had to go there twice, both times in Summer. Yes MOPP level 4 was with mask, gloves, suits and boots. My mask always leaked. I figured if we got into a war with the Russians and they used nerve gas, I was a dead duck.
They are neat figures though. Something different.

Hi Jrsteel,

Ah the 4th ID did you like Carson? We enjoyed or time there even if my wife was in the 3rd ACR it was still interesting though. Still amazed that there isnt a toy soldier shop in that town of nearly 500K. I did find a small shop in FT Collins that had Britains so I was happy. Are there any old sets you are looking for in particular? If I see anything interesting I will send you a PM.

Talk to you later

Dave

Can not blame you at all and what's great about it is that you've made it a point to share them with us with your photos.........Please continue to....The Lt.

I did like Ft. Carson and Colorado was beautiful. It was sad to read last week that 119 soldiers from Ft. Carson had been killed in Iraq.
Old sets? I'm looking for some Ft. Henry Guards. I have an officer and one soldier. Looking to complete the set.

Does anyone else have these sets where the horses don't have any gas mask protection or is that I got these too early at the West Coaster Show (March 2007) and they have since rectified the problem because I have three different sets.

Dear Carlos,
The sets that Frontline sold at the 2007 West Coaster had horses without gas masks. Following criticism at the show, Frontline redid the sets to add gas masks. You have some rare pieces.:)

Yeah, I wondered about that Steven. The Frontline website depicts the horses with gas masks so previous posts in this thread were a bit confusing. Not that it takes much to confuse me...!!!:eek:;):)

I bought the new German WWI cavalry without the horse gas masks at the West Coaster. I always buy Frontline's new offerings at the West Coaster and Chicago shows. In so doing, I have ended up with their earliest pieces which sometimes are later corrected. I am going to buy the correct figures in Chicago.

Please let me know if this cavalryman:

is same size than K&C/William Britain WW1 cavalrymen, or a lil'smaller?
